Later on today, Gareth Southgate and his England team will step out at Wembley Stadium to take on Hungary in their eighth World Cup Qualifying game of ten. Having won six of the previous seven, drawing the other, the Three Lions are now just four points away from confirming their place in Qatar in December 2022.
With Germany becoming the first European team confirmed as qualified for the World Cup last night, and it is likely that Denmark will follow them later today, England need just four points to be certain of qualifying, although they may not need that many depending on how other results go in the group.
With two games left after tonight’s game, including a home game with Albania and then an away game at San Marino, it looks a formality for Gareth Southgate’s team to qualify, as three points against San Marino, who are a worse team than Andorra, should be a given.
That means that a point or better tonight should be enough to ensure England progress, regardless of how they get on against Albania on Matchday 9.
After reaching the semifinals of the World Cup, then the first Nations League tournament and then the final of Euro 2020, England have enjoyed great success under Southgate and this strong World Cup Qualifying campaign is just further evidence of that.

England V Hungary Preview
England come into this game after what was largely a second-string team hammered Andorra 5-0 away from home on Saturday. A high quality performance from a young England team saw five different goalscorers find the net and ensured that Gareth Southgate’s men remained on track for top spot in the group.
Hungary went down to a 1-0 home defeat to Albania in their game on Saturday, a disappointing result for the Hungarians who had held Portugal and France at home during the European Championships in the summer. That loss now all but rules them out of finishing second in the group and means that they won’t be appearing in Qatar in December 2022.
In the other result in the Group, Poland thrashed San Marino 5-0 to keep up the pressure on Albania, who are now just one point ahead of the Poles.
Group I Table (after 7 Matchdays)
- England – 7, 23-2, 19 pts
- Albania – 7, 11-6, 15 pts
- Poland – 7, 24-8, 14 pts
- Hungary – 7, 12-11, 10 pts
- Andorra – 7, 4-19, 3 pts
- San Marino – 7, 1-29, 0 pts
In addition to England facing Hungary tonight, we will also see a pivotal game in the group in Tirana as second-placed Albania face Poland, with whoever wins that game taking a massive step towards finishing at least second in the group.
The Poles were easy winners when the two teams met in Warsaw in September, winning that game 4-1, but since then Albania have bounced back, winning their last three to move a point ahead of Poland in the table.
The other game sees the two minnows in the group, San Marino and Andorra face each other with Andorra winning the first game between the two in the group 2-0 at home.
England V Hungary Team News
Gareth Southgate picked what was largely a second-string team for Saturday’s game with Andorra, perhaps with this game very much in mind for his first choice players. As such, I don’t expect too many of those that started the game on Saturday to do so in tonight’s clash.
One player who might is Manchester City’s Phil Foden who was excellent in the game against Andorra and who may well have played himself into contention to start this game for the Three Lions.
The likes of Kyle Walker, Declan Rice, Raheem Sterling, Mason Mount, Harry Kane, Jordan Pickford and Jack Grealish are all likely to return to the side, with Jordan Henderson perhaps set to replace the injured Kalvin Phillips in midfield.
- Probable England Team – (4-3-3) – Pickford, Walker, Chilwell, Mings, Stones, Rice, Henderson, Foden, Grealish, Kane, Sterling.
Hungary come into this game in a poor run of results, their only win in the last four games coming at home to Andorra by an unconvincing 2-1 scoreline. They have lost twice to Albania 1-0 in that run, as well as being comfortably beaten 4-0 by England on home soil.
It’s hard to see what changes Marco Rossi can make to improve things for this game as his side do look a little devoid of confidence, although full backs Lang and Kecskes may come in to give the defence a bit more strengthening.
Szoboszlai is the best Hungarian player and will likely be England’s main threat in the game.
- Probable Hungary Team – (5-4-1) – Gulacsi, Lang, Kecskes, A.Szalai, Orban, Botka, Nagy.A, Schafer, Sallai.R, Szoboszlai, Salloi.
England V Hungary Predictions And Tips
After a very strong qualifying campaign, not to mention a superb 4-0 win over tonight’s opponents in Budapest, it is hard to see England making a mess of things tonight against a team that they have enjoyed a good record over of late.
Hungary’s last win over England came in the 1962 World Cup, a 2-1 win, since then they have played England 14 times, picking up two draws and losing the other dozen games.
It is hard to make a case for Hungary to get anything here. They were outplayed by England at home a couple of months ago and their form of late has been poor. Confidence in the team looks low and with England flying at home and in good form, and with plenty of players finding the net for the Three Lions, this should be a comfortable night for England.
As such, I have reflected this in my tips below:
- England to Win – 1/7
- Over 2.5 Goals – 8/13
- Result & Both Teams to Score – England & No – 8/15
- Correct Score – England 3-0 Hungary – 9/2
- Half Time-Full Time – England/England – 8/15
- Anytime Goalscorer – Raheem Sterling (England) – 11/10
- England to Score a Penalty – 12/5
If you are having a bet good luck on the game tonight!
