One of the highlights of the sporting year is going to be the 2023 Women’s T20 World Cup.

2023 Women’s T20 World Cup: the basics
The 2023 Women’s T20 World Cup kicks off on 10 February 2023 and runs for just over a fortnight, until 26 February. Taking place in South Africa, this is the eighth iteration of the Women’s T20 World Cup.
But is it really right to call it the 2023 World Cup? Well, originally it was planned to take place in late 2022. However, as the 2022 Qatar Men’s Soccer World Cup was taking place then, the International Cricket Council took the decision to hold it in early 2023 instead.
The teams taking part in the 2023 Women’s T20 World Cup
In total, 10 teams are taking part in the 2023 Women’s T20 World Cup. Here’s the full list:
- South Africa
- Australia (defending champions)
- England
- India
- New Zealand
- Pakistan
- Sri Lanka
- West Indies
- Bangladesh
- Ireland
As host nation, South Africa qualified automatically. Most teams won qualification automatically by being the highest ranking teams in the T201 Rankings. Meanwhile, two other teams qualified via a tournament. Those teams are Bangladesh and Ireland.
Each country’s squad has a pre-selected squad of 15 players going to play on the world stage in South Africa.
A little more about the venues
In order to make this cricketing event a country-wide affair, there are three different cities hosting matches for the world cup. They are Cape Town and nearby Paarl on the west coast and east coast city Gqeberha.
With a capacity of 25,000 spectators, Cape Town’s Newlands Cricket Ground is the biggest venue. THis is followed by the 19,000-seater St George’s Park Cricket Ground in Gqebera and finally, Boland Park in Paarl, which seats 10,000 people.
Two groups for the world cup teams
Whether or not you like cricket, we all know that what team your country is grouped in plays a huge part into how they progress in a big sporting tournament. So when these groups were announced, all eyes were on the details.
Group A consists of Australia, Bangladesh, New Zealand and South Africa. Meanwhile, Group B is England, India, Ireland, Pakistan and the West Indies. An interesting mix, to be sure.
The matches to keep a close eye on
Host nation South Africa have the privilege of playing the first 2023 world cup match, battling Sri Lanka in Cape Town on 10 February.
We’re also extremely interested to see how New Zealand fare against defending champions Australia on 11 February.
Meanwhile, the first Group B match is taking place on 11 February, with England taking on the West Indies in Paarl.
The knockout stage matches kick off from 23 February in Cape Town. And the final will, of course, be on 26 February.
