The term Super League raises a few eyebrows in the football community these days. But we’re not talking about the botched attempt at a men’s European Super League today. We’re going to tell you everything you need to know about the fantastic and action-packed Women’s Super League.
1. The Women’s Super League is the biggest female football league in England
English soccer has a name for excellence all over the world. So the fact that this is the biggest in that country signals it’s truly the one to watch if you’re interested in British football.
2. It was founded in 2010
Founded just over a decade ago, the Women’s Super League first started playing matches in 2011. However, that wasn’t the start of big matches in female football. This league replaced the Women’s Premier National Division.
3. The league has experimented with the seasons
When the Women’s Super League was established, they spend the first seven years kicking off the season in March and playing their final matches in October. That’s pretty out there in the world of European football.
However, since 2017, they’ve gone back to tradition by starting the season in September and playing through until May. This is a more familiar format to many spectators.
4. 12 teams take part in the League
A total of 12 teams take part in each season. This has increased from the original eight teams that competed during the first season.
5. Only four teams who played in the original season are playing in the current season
Sometimes men’s football seems achingly predictable. That’s why we’re delighted to see a relatively interesting turnover in the world of the women’s football. Out of the eight teams that played in the original season back in 2011, only four of them are playing in the current season. That’s Arsenal, Birmingham City, Everton and Chelsea.
6. Chelsea are the team to beat in the Women’s Super League
The mighty Chelsea are the team you need to watch out for in Women’s Super League matches. They and the reigning champions and have won the trophy an impressive four times. And they were runners up twice.
7. Four teams have won the title
Since the first season, a total of four teams have become victors. As we just pointed out, Chelsea are the most decorated. Following up from that, there’s Arsenal who have come first three times, Liverpool who won twice and Manchester City who became champions for the first and only time in 2016.
8. It’s easy to tune into the Women’s Super League
