Anyone for tennis? It’s that time of year again when everyone in the UK puts on their Fred Perry t-shirt and shorts, takes the racket and balls out of mothballs and heads to the local courts to show their friends just how the top tennis pros in the world should be doing it.
That’s right, Wimbledon 2022 fortnight is almost upon us and with the qualifiers ongoing this week ahead of the start of the main tournament on Monday next week, it promises to be a busy week not just for those already in the First Round draw, but especially those trying to earn a place in it.
The last remaining Grand Slam tournament played on grass, Wimbledon fortnight is perhaps the tournament with the most traditions in the game and while this year’s event won’t carry rankings points, due to sanctions imposed by the professional tours due to Wimbledon organisers banning Russian and Belarussian players from competing, there is still plenty to look forward to.
In fact, it could well be the most open men’s and women’s tournaments in many a year and one that will certainly appeal to punters that enjoy a bet on the tennis.

Wimbledon 2022 – Preview And Pre-Tournament News
There have been a number of big news stories ahead of the Wimbledon tournament this year and not all have been positive news.
After the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the All-England Club, after being pressured by the UK Government, have banned Russian and Belarussian players from competing in the event, a move that has not gone down well with the ATP and WTA tours, who have removed the ranking points that would have been awarded at the event.
Players too have voiced their displeasure with a number stating that this year’s event would be little more than a glorified exhibition tournament, comments which have rankled a few players that have won here.
Naomi Osaka has already withdrawn from the women’s tournament and two of the biggest British stars, US Open winner Emma Raducanu and former Wimbledon champion Andy Murray, are both struggling to be fit after sustaining injuries in the run up to the tournament.
However, on a positive note, a living legend in the game will be on court at the event as Serena Williams makes her return to the professional tour as a wildcard entrant into the women’s tournament after a year out due to an injury she sustained in the first round of Wimbledon last year.
In the women’s event, Iga Swiatek has been almost unstoppable in the last few months, but grass is not the Poles favourite surface, so will someone be able to come through the field and get the better of her for the first time in six tournaments?
In the men’s event, Rada Nadal has won the first two Slam events of the year in Australia and France and he could make that three with a win here. However, Novak Djokovic will be a major threat once again and although a number of top ranked players will be absent, there’s still plenty of players in the men’s draw that could land the win.

Wimbledon Men’s Tournament
Who are the bookmakers four favourites to win the tournament?
- Novak Djokovic – 4/5 fav
- Matteo Berrettini – 11/2
- Rafael Nadal – 13/2
- Carlos Alcaraz – 8/1
Who from outside that group could go deep into the tournament?
There’s lots of players that could go well given the fact that a number of top 20 players are missing due to the ban.  However, I think after a very positive performance at Queen’s Club last week, Marin Cilic (20/1), a former finalist here, has the potential to perhaps cause an upset and earn a spot in the last four.
Any long odds (50/1 or greater) players that could cause an upset or two?
One player to watch, especially in the early rounds is Norwegian star Casper Ruud (66/1). He flopped on grass at Queens, losing to Ryan Penistone, but he reached the French Open final earlier this year and that experience on grass will have done him good. He’s ranked fifth in the world, and so those 66/1 odds look very generous.
Which British player will last longest in the tournament and when will they be beaten?
I think Cameron Norrie and Dan Evans will both reach the Round of 32, but perhaps not go any further. Andy Murray could, but so much depends on his fitness and if he isn’t at 100%, then he may struggle to make the second week of action. However, if his injury clears up, Murray could be a contender late into the tournament.
What is my best betting tip for the men’s tournament?
I know it is boring and somewhat predictable, but I can’t see anybody being able to live with Novak Djokovic on a grass court at the moment, so I’d back the Serbian to win at 4/5 and maybe have an each way bet on Marin Cilic at 20/1.

Wimbledon Women’s Tournament
Who are the bookmakers four favourites to win the tournament?
- Iga Swiatek -6/4 fav
- Cori Gauff – 10/1
- Simona Halep – 12/1
- Ons Jabeur – 14/1
Who from outside that group could go deep into the tournament?
Much will depend on how fit Emma Raducanu is and how match fit Serena Williams is, on top form, both these players could win the event, but with injuries and a lack of match fitness, I can’t see them making much headway here.
Garbine Muguruza doesn’t have much form to speak of, but she is a two-time Wimbledon champion and does tend to get the best out of herself for this event so she could be one to watch at 22/1.
Any long odds (50/1 or greater) players that could cause an upset or two?
American Jessica Pegula at 50/1 is one to watch. She’s never been past the second round at Wimbledon but she has only played here once. She’s reached the quarter finals of both the Australian and French Opens this year and her form is so much better in 2022 compared to last year, she could well surprise a few here.
Which British player will last longest in the tournament and when will they be beaten?
If Emma Raducanu is fit and well, then it will be her, but that looks unlikely and the signs are not great that she will be fit. Outside of that, it is hard to see any British woman going into the second week of action and most may not get beyond the first round. I’d say Heather Watson could reach Round 3, but I think that is as far as she could go.
What is my best betting tip for the women’s tournament?
Iga Swiatek is winning everything she competes in at the moment, but grass is not her favourite circuit and she only reached the fourth round here last year. That said, her form now compared to then is chalk and cheese and she is the player to back at 6/4 for the win. However, I do feel that Maria Sakkari at 20/1 or Garbine Muguruza at 22/1 are both decent each way bets that will pay out if they can reach the final.
