It’s going to be a very busy few months of boxing across the world with some stellar match ups to look forward to as we see out the year. We don’t really get chance to cover many bouts in a single article with so many other big sports events to look forward to, so this article will take a look at a few of the massive bouts on the horizon over the next few months and give you our top tips for each.
That includes the massive heavyweight rematch as Anthony Joshua seeks to get his career back on track after his shock defeat to Mexican David Ruiz earlier this year. Deontay Wilder is also back in action against Luis Ortiz, while in a few weeks Derek Chisora hopes to take a step closer to a World title shot when he faces Joseph Parker.
However, it’s not just heavyweight action that there is to look forward to with some stellar matches to enjoy across all weight levels and across all corners of the globe.
Boxing is particularly loved in Pennsylvania, the home of Rocky Balbao and if you are a native of the state of the Italian Stallion, then you can enjoy betting on boxing thanks to new laws passed in the state. Let’s now take a look, in chronological order, of some of the massive bouts coming up over the remainder of 2019.
Sunday 29th September
- Errol Spence v Shawn Porter
Las Vegas will be the venue for this welterweight battle between two of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world today. Errol Spence will put his IBF belt on the line and Porter the WBC belt in what should be a cracking contest.
Both come into this fight in good form, Spence has not lost in 25 fights and defeated Mikey Garcia back in March, while Porter, who is a more natural welterweight, defeated Yordanis Ugas around the same time to set up the big clash.
Spence is the clear favourites with bet365 at 1/8, with Porter the surprise 5/1 outsider and while Spence may be the more accomplished technician, I wonder if he has the power at welterweight to give Porter problems. As such, I think Porter at 5/1, could be a good bet for a knockout win, however if it goes the distance, Spence’s more accomplished skill-set should see him emerge as the winner.
Saturday 26th October
- Joseph Parker v Dereck Chisora
After losing to Anthony Joshua and then Dillian Whyte, Joseph Parker has got his career back on track with wins over Alexander Flores and Alex Leapai in recent months and now he takes on veteran Dereck Chisora, fresh from a strong win over Artuz Szpilka, in what is being seen by many as a world title eliminator.
Parker is the clear favourite in this fight with the New Zealander 1/2 with bet365 to land the win and he is a younger, more agile fighter who is likely to have more stamina than his older opponent. Chisora though does pack real power in his punch and he has proven on more than one occasion that while he may not be physically the strongest, he does not lack heart and his right hand is dangerous throughout the giths.
Parker however has gone the distance with some tough competitors in his time and I am backing him to come through this test, even if it is on points.
This is a fantastic card of boxing which will also feature Regis Prograis taking on Josh Taylor, while a there is a fantastic all-British clash as Lee Selby takes on Ricky Burns in what should be a cracking match up at featherweight.
Saturday 2nd November
- Saul Alvarez v Sergey Kovalev

Canelo Alvarez may be rated by many as one of the strongest pound-for-pound fighters on the planet, but he is taking a big risk moving up in weight two classes to take on light heavyweight star Sergey Kovalev in what promises to be one of the boxing bouts of the year in Las Vegas this November.
The Mexican, fresh from his big win over Gennady Golovkin, is attempting to win a belt in a fourth weight division but takes on the dangerous Kovalev, who has a massive punch and who could pose Alvarez his biggest test in recent years.
Kovalev came through a battle with Britain’s Anthony Yarde recently and that really tested the Russian a lot more than many expected, meaning that he has drifted a little in the betting. The Light Heavyweight champ is 7/2 to win the bout, with Alvarez a surprise 1/5 odds on favourite.
The Mexican has a fine chin and he’ll need it but if he can dodge Kovalev’s big bullets, he should emerge as the winner on points.
Saturday 9th November
- Deontay Wilder v Luis Ortiz
After his stunning first round blowout of rival Dominic Breazeale, Deontay Wilder banished the controversial draw with Tyson Fury (a fight which many believe he lost) to establish himself as the number one heavyweight in the world today and he defends his WBC title against Luis Ortiz, who failed a drugs test a few years back.
Until then, Ortiz was ranked highly by many organisations up until that point. They have met before, with Wilder scoring an 11th round victory back in March 2018. Since then Ortiz has beaten Cojanu, Kaufmann and Hammer in his last three bouts, to move his record on to 31-1.
However, Wilder now seems to be the much stronger of the two fighters and at 2/11 to win, he should stop Ortiz earlier than he did in the first fight.
Saturday 7th December
- Anthony Joshua v Andy Ruiz Jr
The last big bout of the year is the one that has most people talking as Andy Ruiz Jr will defend his titles against the man he took them from, Anthony Joshua, in Saudi Arabia in December. The Mexican secured a massive surprise win over Joshua in New York earlier this year with the British former Champion looking a pale shadow of himself.
Since then, Joshua has been proclaiming that he will win his belts back in the rematch, which he activated due a clause in the contract for the first fight. This is a must-win bout for Joshua if he is to stand any chance of getting into a moneyspinning series of fights with Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder in 2020 and beyond.
The former champion is 3/10 on to gain revenge in the rematch with Andy Ruiz Jr 12/5, and this time around, with renewed focus and hopefully in much better shape, I expect Joshua to land the victory and to regain the titles.
