We’ve done a deep dive to give you a selection of our favourite weird NFL facts.
Whether you’re already a big fan or your new to the National Football League action, we’re pretty sure you’re going to learn something brand new. And something just plain weird.
The NFL is made out of two different sporting organisations
If you’re new to the NFL and used to other sports, this is definitely one of those very weird NFL facts. During each NFL competition, the teams come from two different pools. The American Football Conference and the National Football Conference. The top 16 in each of those organisations go on to compete in the NFL. This is hard to wrap your head around if you’re not already into the NFL, because it’s not like how things work in say the Rugby World Cup or the Premier League. But it’s how those yanks do it.
There have only been four NFL-free Thanksgiving Days
Since the NFL began, there have only been four years in which they haven’t played Thanksgiving Day games. And despite the fact the last few years have been fairly cancel/postponement-heavy in other sports, those non-Thanksgiving NFL years happened a lot longer ago. They were during World War Two, from 1941 until 1945.
One of the most memorable NFL moments in history is all about a butt
Speaking of Thanksgiving, one of the craziest every NFL moments happened on Thanksgiving. This is one of those weird NFL facts you won’t forget in a hurry. Read all about the hilarious ass-to-face moment in the 2012 Jets Patriots game here.
There was no Super Bowl for 47 years
Even though the NFL was founded in 1920, the Super Bowl only came onto the scene in 1967. What is now such an extremely familiar event was only introduced in the Swinging Sixties. Now isn’t that a very weird NFL fact?
Super Bowl rings are probably the ultimate in sports memorabilia
Some dismiss them as tacky, while other see them as an incredible symbol of sporting success. Every year, Super Bowl champs are presented with solid gold rings dripping in jewels to commemorate their victories. If you’re a pro player, it’s the ultimate status symbol. Some of the best players of all time have them. But if you’re a collector, the chance to own one of these is extremely attractive. In fact, in 2008, someone paid $69,000 for a Pittsburgh Steelers Super Bowl ring from the 1970s!
13: unlucky for some?
The Green Bay Packers are the most triumphant of all teams in NFL history. To date, they’ve won 13 titles. Nine of these wins came in the pre-Super Bowl era. And they certainly started the Super Bowl era with a bang, winning the first two Super Bowls in a row. However, they haven’t won any other Super Bowls since 2010 and haven’t even come in second place. Is their 13-title record unlucky for those players? Only time will tell…
