The big news last week in the Premier League was the top two cementing their place at the top of the table, Manchester City inflicting a humiliating 8-0 defeat on a hapless Watford on Saturday, with the Citizens being 5-0 up inside the opening 18 minutes of the game. This was then followed by Liverpool’s fine 2-1 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge as the Reds maintained their perfect start to the season over one of their most fierce rivals.
There were big wins too this past week for Burnley, Bournemouth and Sheffield United, while Leicester City continued their excellent start coming back from a goal down to beat Tottenham 2-1 at the King Power Stadium, a result which means Spurs remain without an away league victory for over eight months.

Premier League Matchday 7 Preview
Saturday 28th September
- Sheffield United v Liverpool
Bramhall Lane is never an easy place to go but Liverpool have already won on the road at Southampton, Burnley and Chelsea this season and I can’t see the Reds losing a grip on their 100% start against the Blades. I back the home side to make it difficult early on, but if the Reds get a goal and force the home side to attack them, it could be a tough day for the home fans. Tip – Liverpool to win to nil – 6/5.
- Aston Villa v Burnley
Dean Smith will be worried at the form his Villa side are showing at the moment. They could not beat a ten-man Arsenal despite holding a 2-1 lead in their last game and Burnley are a very tough proposition for the Premier League new boys. Sean Dyche has his team firing well this season and I fancy them to come here and get another decent result, although I can’t quite see it being the win. Tip – Draw – 12/5.
- Bournemouth v West Ham United
Two teams that enjoyed very good wins last weekend will pit their wits against against each other at the Vitality Stadium. Of the two, I have been more impressed with how Bournemouth have played of late, but West Ham’s ability to dig out the win over Manchester United, despite playing below their best, was admirable. I think this will be a close one but I think West Ham’s consistency just gives them the edge and I am backing them to land the win here. Tip – West Ham to win – 17/10.
- Chelsea v Brighton

It’s incredible to think that after three home games Chelsea fans are still waiting to see their team land a victory but I do feel that Frank Lampard’s men will achieve that here against a well organised but lacking firepower Brighton side. Graham Potter has found goals tough to come by with his team and although Chelsea are shipping a few goals defensively, I think they will do enough to claim the win here. Tip – Chelsea to win and both teams to score – 15/8.
- Crystal Palace v Norwich City
A last gasp equaliser from Wolves denied Palace a win at home last weekend and they’ll want to put that right here against a Norwich side that have struggled on the road defensively this season. Palace’s wastefulness in front of goal is a real issue though and unless they can solve that, they are always going to find points hard to pick up. They should do enough to get the win here though, but I feel it could be unconvincing. Tip – Crystal Palace to win and both teams to score – 13/5.
- Tottenham v Southampton
Spurs home form has been relatively strong in recent times, although they have lost at home to Newcastle this season. The Saints were well beaten by Bournemouth last time out which was a real blow for them and I can’t see their season getting any better from this trip to London. Spurs should win this one comfortably. Tottenham to win to nil – 7/5.
- Wolves v Watford
Two sides without a win in the Premier League this season will meet at Molineux in what both will feel is a winnable game. Watford’s brave comeback against Arsenal a fortnight ago will be long forgotten after the debacle at City and I can’t see how they bounce back from that here against a Wolves side who are in better form and who desperately need the points. I think on Saturday, they will get them. Tip – Wolves to win 2-1 – 17/2.
- Everton v Manchester City
City bounced back to form with an 8-0 demolition job on Watford while Everton were losing at home to Sheffield United last week. The Toffee’s used to have a good record against City, but they were well beaten by the Citizens last season and I can see a similar result here again to heap the pressure on Everton boss Marco Silva. Tip – Raheem Sterling to score anytime and Manchester City to win 3-1 – 14/1.
Sunday 29th September
- Leicester City v Newcastle United
These two teams have had somewhat contrasting starts to the season and while Newcastle did not lose last week at home to Brighton, they also looked startlingly toothless in attack at times. In contrast, Leicester look sharp and their win over Tottenham last week will have given them a real boost. I fully expect a good Leicester performance and a strong win for the Foxes. Tip – Leicester to win to nil – 13/10.
Monday 30th September
- Manchester United v Arsenal
This should be an intriguing game between two former giants of the Premier League fallen on tougher times. Both will be hoping for Champions League qualification this season but after a shaky start that has seen United win just twice and Arsenal three times, it is the Gunners that have the edge. United are generally stronger at home but I feel Arsenal’s pacy attack will cause United’s back line some problems. Arsenal’s record at Old Trafford is poor, but I am backing them to pick up a point here. Tip – Draw – 12/5.
