Not only are GAA sports absolutely massive, they are of huge historical significance too. And this is, arguably, most apparent during Bloody Sunday, which took place on 21 November 1920. A blood-thirsty tit-for-tat between the Irish rebels and the British forces culminated in the British forces opening fire during a GAA match in Dublin’s famous Croke Park stadium. Spectators, players and children died and were injured.
The Bloodied Field tackles the run-up to the event, the event itself and the aftermath with heartbreaking and meticulous detail.
The one about American culture
If you’re not from America, it’s easy to think you can know everything about it from blockbusters and listening to the odd podcast series. But the interesting thing about the country is its nuances that can’t be summed up so easily.
On the face of it, H G Bissinger’s Friday Night Lights is about one Texan town and one season of high school football. But this book, set in the 1980s, reveals so much more than that. It gives you, as a reader, a snapshot into the phenomenon of not only high school football, but small town America. And, in some ways, about how American culture in general works.
