There were a number of surprise results in the third round including Newcastle’s shock 1-0 home defeat to Cambridge United, Reading losing 2-1 away to Kidderminster Harriers and Arsenal’s 1-0 loss to Nottingham Forest on Sunday evening.
Other underdog victories included Boreham Wood beating AFC Wimbledon, Plymouth getting the better of Birmingham City, Huddersfield Town beating Burnley and Hartlepool United defeating Blackpool.
Six Premier League teams, Burnley, Newcastle United, Arsenal, Watford, Leeds United and Aston Villa were all eliminated at the third round stage which means just 14 of the 32 teams remaining in the competition are from the top flight.
The top three in the Premier League made comfortable progress with Manchester City and Liverpool both registering 4-1 victories, while Chelsea went one better with a 5-1 win over Chesterfield.
The most exciting game came at Oakwell, where Barnsley defeated Barrow 5-4 after extra time after a fantastic game that saw the League Two side come back from deficits three times to force extra time.
Two non-league teams remain in the draw, Boreham Wood and Kidderminster Harriers after their wins over league opposition.
The draw for the fourth round of the FA Cup was made on Sunday evening live on television just after the Nottingham Forest v Arsenal game, and the 32 teams were drawn into the following ties.
FA Cup Fourth Round Draw
Ties to be played the weekend of the 4th 5th, 6th and 7th February.
- Liverpool v Cardiff City
- Manchester City v Fulham
- Manchester United v Middlesbrough
- Cambridge United v Luton Town
- Nottingham Forest v Leicester City
- Kidderminster Harriers v West Ham United
- Peterborough United v Queens Park Rangers
- Wolves v Norwich City
- Chelsea v Plymouth Argyle
- Huddersfield Town v Barnsley
- Everton v Brentford
- Stoke City v Wigan Athletic
- Southampton v Coventry City
- Crystal Palace v Hartlepool
- Tottenham v Brighton
- Bournemouth v Boreham Wood
The top teams in the Premier League were dealt some favourable ties in the draw. Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea, Southampton and Crystal Palace were all given home ties against lower league opponents.
It would be a surprise if all of those teams don’t make it through to the fifth round of the competition.
Nottingham Forest’s reward for beating Arsenal is a chance to take down the holders of the FA Cup in Leicester City in what should be a very interesting East Midlands derby game.
For me, the most intriguing tie of the round is Kidderminster Harriers facing West Ham in what should be a fantastic payday for the non-league side against a David Moyes team that have been going superbly well this season. A giant killing may be a big ask in this game, but I am certain Kidderminster will give their opponents a real battle.
There are some interesting all-Premier League ties too including Wolves taking on Norwich, with the home side very much the favourites to land the win there, while the other two games pit Everton against Brentford and then Tottenham against Brighton. Two games which are far more even and could go either way.
Boreham Wood’s reward for their win is a trip to AFC Bournemouth, while Huddersfield and Barnsley will lock horns in what is sure to be a fierce Yorkshire derby between the two Championship teams.
Lastly, Cambridge’s reward for their sensational win at Newcastle United is a home tie against Luton Town, a game which both teams will feel that they have an excellent chance of winning if they can play at their best.
