Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 blockbuster Sci-Fi classic Robocop was one of the surprising successes of the year. The film starred Peter Weller as the unfortunate Officer Murphy who is lured to a brutal 
death by a gang of thugs led by Clarence Boddiker, hired by the corrupt OCP President Dick Lewis (Ronny Fox) to justify a more lethal means of policing. After his death, Murphy’s body is used as the basis for a new form of police officer, Robocop, an alternative to the more aggressive (and bug-ridden) ED-209 robotic police officer.
So begins the story of how Robocop not only maintains the law but also brings to justice those most responsible for the death of Officer Murphy. Although known for its action shots and fight sequences, Robocop actually struck a chord within critical circles for its simple exploration of what it is to be human, when does a machine become a machine and a man stop being a man? It was the exploration of these themes that perhaps lifted the film and saw it become a huge success when released.
Now thirty years after the release of the film, Playtech have put together the finishing touches on their Robocop Slot game. At first glance, it seems as if they have captured the look and feel of the film quite beautifully, even down to using the recognisable font in the title. What you have with Robocop is a 5×3 reel slot that has the usual playing card low symbols from Jack through to the Ace, which offer you the lower value wins, while the Police Car, Robocop’s Gun, Dick Jones and Officer Lewis symbols are the higher paying symbols offering wins of up to 750 coins. The highest paying standard symbol is Robocop who offers a 1,000 coin jackpot for five on a payline.
However that isn’t the biggest prize on offer in the game as five of the OCP logo Wild symbols will offer you a 2,500 coin jackpot prize. In addition, this symbol can be used with others on the reels to substitute for them and produce additional winning paylines.
There are four bonus games that can be triggered randomly at any point in the base game and they are as follows:
- Shootout Spin Feature – Where Robocop will shoot out Wild symbols from his gun turning symbols on the reels Wild to increase the chances of a better value win.
- Robot Attack Spin Feature – A 3×3 ED-209 massive symbol is added to the middle reels for the next spin, which is entirely Wild and which can help land some big value wins if it is landed on the spin.
- Line-Up Spin Feature – Each payline that you have won on during this spin will have a random multiplier applied to it to increase the value of the win.
- OCP Bonus Feature – This is a simple selection game based in the OCP offices where you pick symbols to win cash prizes.
What is nice about the Robocop slot though is that when you land three or more of the Detroit Police badge scatter symbols on the reels, you trigger the Free Spins bonus round and in this round, you get enhanced versions of the base game bonus games to select from.
- Shootout Free Games Feature – In this bonus you get 10 Free Spins with Robocop’s gun shooting out additional Wilds on each spin to help you land a big win.
- Robot Attack Free Games Feature – The ED-209 mega symbol is placed on the second, third and fourth reels for five free spins and if you manage to land it, you can trigger some sizeable wins in the bonus.

There’s plenty of great bonuses to unlock in the Robocop slot and it plays as a relatively player-friendly medium variance slot with a nice mix of lower to higher value wins spread throughout the game, though the higher value wins do tend to come in the free spins bonus games.
How to win at the Robocop Slot
The key to winning at the Robocop slot is the features. The base game payouts are generally small apart from a few of the five-symbol paylines and these are very difficult to hit, so in the base game, you are looking to manage your bankroll well enough to play through it and hopefully trigger enough of the base game bonus rounds and the three scatter symbols in order to trigger the higher paying bonus features.
Of the two types of bonus, the Free Spins bonuses unlocked by the trio of scatters are much better value, but the base game bonuses are critical to offering you some medium sized wins in the base game, as it can take a while to trigger the free spins bonuses. It’s rare you will hit a big win in the Free Spins bonus games, but it is not impossible.
The better value wins tend to come one you trigger the four Free Games features and of the four games, the Robot Attack game tends to offer better rewards more often, though you can play the other games and still pick up bigger wins, however this particular bonus tended to prove more consistent at hitting the bigger value wins for me.
