But first, let’s begin with a quick definition of what a derby game is, as what qualifies as a derby game nowadays has changed a little from its original definition.

What Is A Derby Game?
Originally, a derby game was a match between two teams that were located close together geographically, originally from the same city.
However, over the years, derby games have evolved now to include teams from the same region that are relatively close together.
Sometimes people can refer to games between rivals as a ‘derby’, for example the Manchester United v Liverpool game has sometimes been called the “North West Derby” even though both these teams have different traditional derby rivals.
What is certain is that derby games give the fixture list added spice and also local fans a game against their rivals that they covet winning more than any other.
So what are the big derby games in the Premier League? Let’s take a look and find out.

Other Derby Games In The Premier League
There are a number of other derby games in the Premier League set to be played over the course of the season.
London Derby Games
There are a number of teams based in London in the Premier League and games between them are technically derby games.
Teams based in London are: Arsenal, Tottenham, Fulham, Chelsea, Brentford, Crystal Palace and West Ham.
This weekend, alongside the North London derby, Crystal Palace will host Chelsea in another London derby game.
East Midlands Derby
There are two teams in the East Midlands, Leicester City and Nottingham Forest, who will contest an East Midlands derby. Occasionally this may involve other teams in the region (such as Notts County or Derby County) if and when they are in the same division.
South Coast Derby
There are also three south coast teams in the Premier League this season, Bournemouth, Southampton and Brighton and games between these are south coast derby matches.
Again, when Portsmouth are in the same division as the other teams they may also be involved in these games.
Midlands Derby
While there is no ‘second city derby’ between Aston Villa and Birmingham City due to Birmingham being in the Championship, there is one Midlands derby this season contested between Wolves and Aston Villa.
If Birmingham City and West Bromwich Albion are in the same division as these teams, these will also be categorised as Midlands derby games.
Rivalry Games
Alongside derby games, the Premier League also features a number of rivalry games each season, usually between the top six teams but sometimes it may be based on other factors too, such as historic rivalries.
