After a rather dismal few weeks of terminable rain, it seems that the UK is getting set for some warmer and sunnier weather, which is just as well as from Monday, the All England Tennis Championships, better known as Wimbledon, gets underway with players competing for the third Grand Slam event of the season.
This year is the 133rd edition of the Championships and Novak Djokovic and Angelique Kerber will be defending the titles that they won so memorably last year. They will start in the draw with 127 other players and play up to seven games in total, across two weeks of action, to try and land the trophy and one of the largest cash prizes in tennis today.
If you fancy a little flutter on the outcome of the Wimbledon Championships for either the male or female tournament, or any of the doubles tournaments for that matter, then bet365 Sport offers an excellent range of bets on the Championships, including matches taking place this week in the qualifiers as well as in the tournament itself when it starts in earnest on Monday 1st July. In this article, we are going to take a look at both the men’s and women’s championships and give you our view on who are the players to watch, who will go far in the tournament, who could disappoint and lastly, who we think will be the player holding the trophy taking the plaudits on centre court in the final weekend of Wimbledon.
Let’s begin with what should be a very competitive women’s tournament.
Wimbledon Women’s Singles Preview

The seedings for the tournament have been announced and are as follows:
Women’s Top 16 Seeds
- Ashleigh Barty (Aus)
- Naomi Osaka (Jap)
- Karolina Pliskova (Cze)
- Kiki Bertens (Hol)
- Angelique Kerber (Ger)
- Petra Kvitova (Cze)
- Simona Halep (Rom)
- Elina Svitolina (Ukr)
- Sloane Stephens (USA)
- Aryna Sabalenka (Blr)
- Serena Williams (USA)
- Anastasija Sevastova (Lat)
- Belinda Bencic (Swi)
- Caroline Wozniacki (Den)
- Wang Qiang (Chi)
- Marketa Vondousova (Cze)
The women’s draw is going to be a very open one once again. Angelique Kerber was the winner last year and the German will be amongst the favourites again this year following her fine win over Serena Williams on centre court last July. However, the women’s game is so even that literally any of the top 16 players listed above will feel that they have a great chance of winning the tournament.
And there are many outside that top sixteen that feel that they have an equally good chance of doing so, not least of all Britain’s top ranked female player and French Open semi-finalist, Johanna Konta.
When you consider that the likes of Konta, Venus Williams, Jelena Ostapenko, Madison Keys and Garbine Muguruza are not even in the top 16 rankings, it is easy to appreciate the depth of quality in the women’s game at present.
I do feel that Serena Williams is always the player to beat on this surface given her superb record at Wimbledon but she has looked like she has struggled with the length of the tournament in recent times and as she is now a year older, I think those issues are likely to be even more palpable this time around.
So could it be a new face on the famous Venus Rosewater Dish this summer? None of the top 16 fill me with any huge amount of confidence that they will win the tournament as I can see problems all will have on grass.
As such, I would not back a winner in this tournament as I think it is just too difficult to predict, however, what I would to is back a player to reach the final each way and given that she fell just short in France, but will have home support behind her this time around. I’m backing Jo Konta each way to reach the final.
Our Tip to Win – Johanna Konta (each way) – 14/1 with bet365 Sport.
Wimbledon Men’s Singles Preview

The men’s seeds were announced earlier this week and are as such:
Men’s Top 16 Seeds
- Novak Djokovic (Ser)
- Roger Federer (Swi)
- Rafael Nadal (Esp)
- Kevin Anderson (S.Af)
- Dominic Thiem (Aut)
- Alexander Zverev (Ger)
- Stefanos Tsitsipas (Gre)
- Kei Nishikori (Jap)
- John Isner (USA)
- Karen Khachanov (Rus)
- Daniil Medvedev (Rus)
- Fabio Fognini (Ita)
- Marin Cilic (Cro)
- Borna Coric (Cro)
- Milos Raonic (Can)
- Gael Monfils (Fra)
If the women’s draw is signified by it being so open, the men’s draw could not be further away from that. The trio at the top, Djokovic, Federer and Nadal will likely be the men to beat again this time around, only I feel Nadal’s chances on grass are slim as the surface does not suit him anywhere near as much as his beloved clay and as such, I would rule the Spaniard out of landing the title here.
For me, that means that despite players like Anderson, Zverev, Thiem, Tsitsipas and Isner, I still cannot see anyone challenging the dominance of Federer and Djokovic and I would expect the two to meet in the final of the men’s tournament, seeing as they will be drawn in separate sides of the draw.
British hopes will likely be with Kyle Edmund but the Brit is an 80/1 shot in a tournament where he hasn’t really performed to his best and with Andy Murray likely to remain focusing on the doubles for the time being, as he continues on his road to recovery after career-threatening surgery, I can’t see any hope for a British male player to go too deep in the tournament this year.
Our Tip to Win – Novak Djokovic – 6/4 with bet365 Sport
