Tonight, the next round of the English Football League Cup (EFL) gets underway. Sixteen teams remain in the competition but by late Wednesday evening, we will have just the eight teams going forward into the quarterfinals.
The matches this week will all be played to a conclusion with penalties used to decide the winner if the game is not settled within the standard 90 minutes.
Five of the games are all Premier League affairs and there are just four teams left in the competition from outside of the topflight of English football, although one of these is guaranteed to reach the quarterfinals as Queens Park Rangers face Sunderland in one of those games.
There will be plenty of interested customers in the action taking place tonight and tomorrow evening across England and if you fancy a wager on the outcome then check out the latest odds and In Play betting options available over the next two days at Bet365 Sport.
However, if you are based in the United States and want to enjoy a wager on one or more of the games over the next couple of days, then check out the odds available on them at the popular BetRivers Sportsbook, which is available across a wide number of states.
Let’s now preview the games and give you our tips for each starting with the matches taking place tonight.
Tuesday 26th October
-
Arsenal v Leeds United
Arsenal have bounced back from their worst ever start to a Premier League season to sit comfortably in midtable on the back of six unbeaten games. Leeds have still won just one the one game in the Premier League this season, but this game may well see both sides rest players and give fringe players a chance. If that is the case then this swings the tie very much in Arsenal’s favour as the Gunners have a far greater strength in depth than Leeds and I would expect them to land the win, especially with them having home advantage.
Our Prediction – Arsenal 2-0 Leeds United – 15/2
-
Chelsea v Southampton
Chelsea smashed seven past Norwich at the weekend, but I think Thomas Tuchel will name a much-changed team from that game for this one against a Southampton side who generally pick most of their first teamers in these type of games. I do think the Saints won’t make it easy for Chelsea here but I am backing the extra quality that the London side have in depth will mean that they will eventually come through the tie and make it into the quarterfinals relatively comfortably.
Our Prediction – Chelsea 3-1 Southampton – 11/1
-
QPR v Sunderland
This non-Premier League clash means we will have one lower league side in the quarterfinals at least. That to me looks like being QPR as not only are they in a division higher than Sunderland, their home form this season has also been very good. Sunderland travelled down to the game via train today which does suggest that they are not taking it that seriously, with promotion from League One their main aim for the season. As such, I think the home side will come through in a tight and edgy game, probably by the odd goal in three.
Our Prediction – Queens Park Rangers 2-1 Sunderland – 15/2
Wednesday 27th October
-
Burnley v Tottenham Hotspur
Without a win this season, Burnley’s only real success has come in this competition, but they face a Spurs side who have lost their last two games, after halting a dismal run of three defeats in a row just beforehand. Burnley’s main focus will be on the Premier League and I can see manager Sean Dyche resting some key players here, as I am sure Spurs will too, but I think that Spurs squad strength puts them at a big advantage as a result. With Harry Kane and Son likely to be on the bench, I am still backing Spurs to do enough and claim the win, even if they have to rely on their subs to pull them through.
Our Prediction – Burnley 1-2 Tottenham – 17/2
-
Leicester City v Brighton
Brighton have enjoyed the better start to the season of these two teams, but at the moment, it is Leicester City that are in the best form and I think that will be key here. I can’t see Brighton making too many changes to their team for this game, while Leicester may well rest some key players too, they also have some fantastic quality replacements to come in, such as Patson Daka who scored four goals away to Spartak Moscow in the Europa League. With Leicester at home too, I think that they will come through this game with the win.
Our Prediction – Leicester City 2-0 Brighton – 9/1
-
Preston North End v Liverpool
After two away wins of 5-0, one at Watford, the other against Manchester United at the weekend, Liverpool will head into this game against Preston full of confidence, but also set to play a number of fringe players that have not featured much for them this season. That said, when they have played, they have done superbly well in this competition, as their 3-0 win over Norwich City showed in the last round. Preston are a hard working side but they are no match for even a second-string Liverpool and this should be a game that the visitors win comfortably.
Our Prediction – Preston North End 0-4 Liverpool – 14/1
-
Stoke City v Brentford
One of the common themes when a top player is linked with a big Premier League team is whether they will be able to perform on a wet Wednesday night away to Stoke. Well Brentford’s foreign legion will have to do precisely that if they are going to progress into the quarterfinals of this competition. Stoke have been slowly but surely improving under Michael O’Neill over the last season and a bit and they are more than capable of giving Brentford a very good game here. I think this one may well be taken to the penalties, where I would expect Brentford to prevail.
Our Prediction – Stoke City 1-1 Brentford – 11/2 (Brentford to win on penalties – 5/1)
-
West Ham United v Manchester City
Both these teams have very solid recent form, especially Manchester City and while West Ham did superbly well to knock out Manchester United in the last round, I think they may come unstuck here, even against a City side with a number of starters rested. Even without those players, City’s team will be exceptionally strong and that is part of the reason why they have won this trophy so often in recent years. West Ham have done very well this season and I can see them pushing City hard, but I think the visitors will be the ones progressing into the quarterfinals.
Our Prediction – West Ham 1-2 Manchester City – 7/1
