Sometimes there’s nothing better than relaxing with a good film. And if you’re a fan of casino games, why not combine your twin interests. So kick back and check out some of these great films about casinos.
21
Blackjack is an extremely popular game, so it’s no wonder that it winds up as the subject to several films about casinos. We love this 2008 movie, that’s based on an astonishing true story.
Kevin Spacey plays the lead role in 21. This is the tale of a group of MIT students who take on the casinos by, effectively, counting cards. Follow the gang to Atlantic City and find out what happens when casinos and college students clash.
Casino
We’ve got a list of all the greatest films about casinos. It’s a no brainer that Casino would appear somewhere. Casino is an absolute classic of a film, especially if you’re interested in the history of Vegas. It’s set in the 1970s, although it was released in 1995.
The director is none other than Martin Scorsese and it stars Robert De Niro and Sharon Stone. If that line up doesn’t get you excited, we don’t know what will. This is a film that shows early Las Vegas in a gritty light, complete with mobsters, corruption and crime. So if that’s the kind of thing that gets you going, take a look at Casino.
The Gambler
Love him or hate him, Mark Wahlberg is a compelling star in this 2014 film. The Gambler tracks a literature professor who enjoys a little blackjack from time to time. But then things get out of control when he runs up a massive debt and owes a wedge of cash to some good for nothing gangsters. Now he has to try figure out how to pay them back.
Owning Mahowny
Like The Gambler, Owning Mahowny talks about downsides to gambling. We appreciate that it doesn’t sugar coat the real, harmful effects gambling addiction can have on people’s lives.
This is based on the true story of a banker from Canada, played by the incomparable Philip Seymour Hoffman, who is an obsessive gambler. Before too long, his debts rack up far beyond what he can afford. It’s in interesting look at how gambling addicts think and react to situations.
Atlantic City
Released in 1980, Susan Sarandon and Burt Lancaster take you on journey of the legalisation of gambling in Atlantic City. It shows you how the casino mecca as we know it today came to be and is a really interesting look at the history and attitudes towards gambling in the United States.
As well as that, it’s a whole lot of fun to watch.
