Europa League
All games in the Europa League kick off at 20.05pm on Thursday night UK time and the score from the first leg is shown in brackets.
CSKA Moscow (1) v (4) Arsenal
Match Betting: CSKA to win – 12/5, Arsenal to win – 19/20, Draw – 5/2
Arsenal romped to victory at the Emirates last Thursday which now leaves CSKA needing a 3-0 win or better in order to progress. In truth, this is a huge task for the Russian side especially against an Arsenal team that have been exceptionally good away from home in the last two rounds against Ostersunds and AC Milan.
The Gunners don’t need to go gung ho to win this game and I think CSKA Moscow have to commit to an attack and that leaves their ageing defence somewhat exposed and I can see Arsenal’s clever, creative midfielders taking full advantage of that.
With Aubameyang in the team, I’d be backing the Gunners to win this one by a few goals, but I think without him, the Gunners don’t possess such a threat. That said, I am still backing them to win here although I think it will be just the one goal between the teams.
Marseille (0) v (1) Red Bull Leipzig
Match Betting: Marseille to win – 6/5, Red Bull Leipzig to win – 19/10, Draw – 12/5
Marseille will feel perhaps a little unlucky to be coming into the home leg of their tie with Red Bull Leipzig a goal down. Timo Werner’s strike on the stroke of half time gave the German side a crucial one-goal lead heading into this second leg and in the grand scheme of things, I think that could well be a massive moment in this tie.
Marseille had plenty of chances on goal in the first game and hit the target more often than the home team but failed to score and while they have an excellent record at home in Europe, Red Bull Leipzig have a decent record on the road, including a superb 3-0 win in Napoli.
That means that while I can see Marseille perhaps winning on the night, I can see Red Bull getting a goal and this tie is one where I feel the away goal will be the difference as I fancy Marseille to win 2-1 on the night, but that would be a result which sees Red Bull go through.
Red Bull Salzburg (2) v (4) Lazio
Match Betting: Red Bull Salzburg to win – 23/20, Lazio to win – 2/1, Draw – 5/1
Lazio’s talented attack was the reason the Italian side came through the first leg with a 4-2 win, their first ever win against an Austrian side in European competition, but Salzburg’s two away goals in Rome will give the home side hope of progressing.
Salzburg’s hopes are pinned on an excellent home record; they have not been beaten at home in the Europa League this season but they have seldom faced a side with as strong an attack as Lazio and the ease with which the Roman side broke through at home does make me feel the Austrian side may struggle here.
Lazio’s form in Europe has been erratic at times sometimes great away from home, other times poor, but I think they’ll do enough to get the job done here and secure a passage into the semifinals with another win on the road.
Sporting Lisbon (0) v (2) Atletico Madrid
Match Betting: Sporting Lisbon to win – 7/2, Atletico Madrid to win – 5/6, Draw – 11/5
But for some calamitous defending by Sebastian Coates and Jeremy Mathieu last week at the Wanda Metropolitano, Sporting Lisbon could have been well in this tie. Unfortunately, Atletico Madrid took advantage of some woeful play by both players to secure a 2-0 lead from the first leg, to put themselves in a very strong position heading into the return match in Lisbon this week.
Sporting have a decent record at home against some of Europe’s best sides this season, both Barcelona and Juventus found life tough there in the Champions League, but Atletico are one of the few sides in Europe capable of holding on to a lead for 90 minutes on the back of their outstanding back four and goalkeeper.
That said, I feel Atletico will find the net on the evening and that means Sporting will need four goals, against one of the best defences in Europe over the past five years or so. That isn’t going to happen and as such, I think that the best Sporting can hope for here is a draw.
However Atletico were so incisive away from home last time out against Lokomotive Moscow, I think they’ll get another win here to complete an easy win over two legs to reach the semifinals.
