Having been beaten in their Nations League opener away to Hungary, ending a long run without defeats for Gareth Southgate’s England team, the Three Lions now face two huge tests in the next few days with games against Germany away and Italy at home.
Both Nations League opponents have generally good records against England over the years and having drawn their opener between each other on the day England lost in Hungary, both Italy and Germany will be keen to pick up positive results against this young English side.
In this article, we are going to preview both games and give you some fantastic facts for both matches, as well as giving you the latest betting odds available for the matches coming up.
As always, we will be using odds provided by bet365 Sport for this article, so let’s begin with a closer look at tonight’s game in Germany.
Nations League Matchday 2

Germany v England
- Date – Tuesday 7th June
- Kick Off – 7.45pm
- Venue – Allianz Arena, Munich, Germany
- Live On – Channel 4
- Last Game – England 2-0 Germany (Euro 2020 Round of 16)
Germany V England Factfile
- The teams have met 33 times previously, Germany winning 15 (some of those games have been as West Germany), while England have won 14 with just four drawn games.
- The highest scoring game between the two was in May 1938 when England defeated Germany in Berlin in front of 120,000 fans by a 6-3 scoreline.
- Germany’s biggest win in this game came in the 2010 World Cup Finals, where they defeated England 4-1 in Bloemfontaine, South Africa.
- England’s biggest victory was a 5-1 win in 2001 in a World Cup Qualifier in Munich. Michael Owen scored three, with Steven Gerrard and Emile Heskey scoring for England after Carsten Jancker had put Germany ahead after 6 minutes.
- The most famous game between the two teams was the 1966 World Cup Final, won by England by a 4-2 scoreline. Geoff Hurst remains the only player to score a hat-trick in a World Cup Final after his trio in this game.
- Only two out of the 34 games between the teams has been scoreless, a 1982 World Cup second round game in Spain, and a friendly back in November 2017 at Wembley.
- Between 1987 and March 2017, neither of the two teams won a match on home soil against their opponent. Both teams wins in that time either came away from home, or at a neutral venue.
- Germany did not beat England until 1968. 38 years after the first game between the two teams. England won seven and drew one of the first eight games between the two, including the 1966 World Cup Final (the final game in that run).
- From 1968 to 1996, England and Germany met 14 times and England won just two of those games. Germany won on 10 occasions with two games finishing as draws. Two German wins in that period came via penalties (in the semi finals of Italia 1990 World Cup and Euro 1996).
- Although English fans rate Germany as one of their most fierce rivals, the Germans most fierce rivalry for fans at least, is with the Netherlands.
Germany V England Betting Odds & Tips
The Germans are 6/5 to win this game with England 12/5 and the draw an 11/5 chance, indicating the bookies feel this is a very even contest.
Germany earned a draw away in Italy in their opening game of the tournament and they’ll want to pick up maximum points here against an England side that were devoid of ideas and quality against Hungary.
England did win the last game between the two last year in the Knockout Round of the European Championships and that 2-0 win should give them confidence here against a strong German side. I can’t quite see England getting the win, but a draw I think is the bet to make here.
- Full Time Result Tip – Draw – 11/5
- Correct Score Tip – Germany 1-1 England – 5/1
- Anytime Goalscorer Tips – Harry Kane (12/5) or Leroy Sane (11/5)

Nations League Matchday 3
England v Italy
- Date – Saturday 11th June
- Kick Off – 7.45pm
- Venue – Wembley Stadium, London, England
- Live On – Channel 4
- Last Game – England 1-1 Italy (Italy won 3-2 on penalties) (Euro 2020 Final)
England v Italy Factfile
- England and Italy have played each other 28 times in total. Italy have won 12 games, England 8 with eight games drawn.
- Italy failed to beat England in the first eight games between the two, England winning four of those games and the others being drawn.
- Since 1973, in the 20 games since, England have won just four, with Italy winning 12 games and drawing just four.
- England have never beaten Italy at a World Cup Finals or European Championship Finals tournament losing games in the 2020 European Championships Final, the 2014 FIFA World Cup Group Stage, the 2012 European Championships Knockout Stage (on penaties) and a 1-0 defeat in the 1980 European Championship.
- Italian coach Roberto Mancini enjoyed a successful spell as manager of Manchester City in England from 2009 to 2013. He also played five games on loan at Leicester City at the end of his career.
England v Italy Betting Odds & Tips
England are 3/4 with bet365 Sport to win this rematch of the Euro 2020 final against a very inexperienced Italian team, with Italy a 15/4 outside bet here. The draw is a 13/5 chance.
After missing out on the World Cup, Italy are very much in a phase of rebuilding right now and Roberto Mancini’s young squad will be put to the test here. England badly need a good result in their first home game of the tournament and I think they may just have enough experience to get it.
- Full Time Result Tip – England to win – 3/4
- Correct Score Tip – England 2-0 Italy – 13/2
- Anytime Goalscorer Tips – Harry Kane & Mason Mount (odds to be announced by bet365 Sport closer to the game)
