Across Europe there are always big games every season, Liverpool v Manchester United in the Premier League, Barcelona v Real Madrid in Spain, Juventus v Inter Milan in Italy and in Germany that game is Bayern Munich facing Borussia Dortmund. Well tonight, that game will take place in the Bundesliga and the stakes could not be higher for either team.

Bayern lead the table by four points and know a win here could deal a potentially fatal blow to Dortmund’s title hopes and strengthen their own stranglehold at the top of the table. However, a win for home side Dortmund would see the gap between the two closed to just one point and would also bring the likes of Bayer Leverkusen, Red Bull Leipzig and even Borussia Moenchengladbach right back into the title race once again.
Make no mistake, this is arguably the biggest game of the Bundesliga season and perhaps the most important for several seasons given the current positions of both teams. So, before we preview tonight’s big game, let’s take a closer look at how the games panned out in the Bundesliga last weekend.
Bundesliga Results
- Hertha Berlin 4-0 Union Berlin
- SC Freiburg 0-1 Werder Bremen
- Paderborn 1-1 Hoffenheim
- Wolfsburg 0-2 Borussia Dortmund
- Borussia Moenchengladbach 1-3 Bayer Leverkusen
- Bayern Munich 5-2 Eintracht Frankfurt
- Schalke 04 0-3 Augsburg
- Mainz 0-5 Red Bull Leipzig
- Cologne 2-2 Fortuna Dusseldorf

There were big wins for Hertha Berlin, Bayern Munich, Augsburg and Red Bull Leipzig in particular this weekend, with Bayer Leverkusen’s superb 3-1 away win over Borussia Moenchengladbach a big result which moved Leverkusen into the Champions League places at the top of the table, while dropping Borussia out of them.
Bayern still lead the table by four points heading into tonights game but their defence did look shaky at times against not a great Frankfurt side. Dortmund are yet to concede a goal since the restart and their comfortable 2-0 win away to Wolfsburg sets us up perfectly for tonight’s game which could well influence the final destination of the Bundesliga title.
Stay tuned at the end of the main match preview as we bring you our quick tips for the other eight Bundesliga games taking place midweek too.
Bundesliga Midweek Fixtures
Borussia Dortmund v Bayern Munich
- Venue – Signal Iduna Park (in Dortmund)
- Kick Off Time – 5.30pm GMT
- Borussia Dortmund Form – WWWWWW (2nd – 57 points from 27 games)
- Bayern Munich Form – WWWWWW (1st – 61 point from 27 games)
- Previous Meeting – Bayern Munich 4-0 Dortmund (9th Nov 2019)
Bayern have held the upper hand in Der Klassiker of late, especially in Munich where they have recorded wins of 4-0, 5-0 and 6-0 going back over the last three seasons. Despite those huge wins, Dortmund have won both the last two games contested at Signal Iduna Park, winning 2-0 at home in August in the German Super Cup, after a 3-2 win at home over Bayern last season.
Borussia Dortmund Team News & Selection

With Marco Reus and Axel Witsel both likely out of this game, the main decision for Lucian Favre is whether to bring back Jadon Sancho into the team after playing the Englishman as a substitute in the last two games. Another choice is whether ex-Liverpool and Juventus midfielder Emre Can will be restored to midfield ahead of either Delaney or Dahoub. It will be tough on whoever misses out if that is the case given Dortmund have won both their last two games against Schalke and Wolfsburg, scoring six goals and not conceding any.
Possible Dortmund XI – 5-2-3 – Burki, Hakimi, Guerriero, Hummels, Akanji, Pizczek, Can, Delaney, Sancho, Hazard, Haaland.
Bayern Munich Team News & Selection

With Tolisso and Coutinho likely out and Sule at best likely to be on the bench, don’t expect too many changes from Hansi Muller for this game. He could elect to make two changes however, if Thiago is fit he could come back into midfield ahead of Goretzka, while Serge Gnabry’s pace may be an option in attack. Again, it is going to be a tough call as to who misses out given Bayern have won 15 of their last 16 games in the Bundesliga, drawing the other.
Possible Bayern XI – 4-2-3-1 – Neuer, Pavard, Davies, Boateng, Alaba, Thiago, Kimmich, Gnabry, Muller, Coman, Lewandowski
Dortmund v Bayern Our Tips
- Match Result / Correct Score – Dortmund to win (13/5) – Dortmund to win 2-1 (12/1)
Both sides come into this game in great form but I think Dortmund have looked the better all round side over the last couple of weeks. Their need for victory is also far greater than Bayern who would likely be happy with a point from this game.
With home advantage, I feel Dortmund will be the team looking to win and I have seen enough frailty in the Bayern back line to suggest that Sancho, Haaland and co could have a real chance to land the win here. I do feel Bayern will score, they always tend to, but I am backing Dortmund to edge the win, most likely by a 2-1 scoreline.
You could also back the bet Dortmund to win and both teams to score bet here, which is currently available with bet365 at odds of 15/4
- Anytime Goalscorer – Erling Haaland (Dortmund) – 8/13
Since joining Dortmund, Haaland has continued his explosive scoring rate that he showed at Salzburg prior to the transfer window. However, he drew a rare blank away to Wolfsburg last week but this is the game in which he will want to show his mettle. If he can cause Bayern’s defence problems with his power, strength and pace, I feel he could be the key to Dortmund’s victory and I would back him to score, even if the odds are not altogether greatly appealing.
For an outside bet on this market, Munich’s lack of marking at corners was exposed twice by Frankfurt in their last game, and as such I think the likes of Emre Can at 7/2 or Mats Hummels at 12/1, who are both solid in the air, could well be a decent bet here too.
