Gaelic football’s most cursed team: Mayo
Despite the fact it’s an amature sport, the GAA’s gaelic football is one of the most closely watched sports on the island of Ireland. Everyone in the country seems to have an opinion about what goes on on the pitch.
But there is one team that everyone raises and eye over and that’s Mayo. The story goes that when they won the Sam Maguire cup in 1951, the team were on a bus. They were so busy celebrating that the driver ended up passing a hearse on the way to a funeral.
The priest who was presiding over the funeral was so angry at the team for their disrespect that he cursed the team. This curse made it so that Mayo wouldn’t win another GAA football final until every single member of the 1951 team was dead.
Only one of the team from 1951 is currently alive. Mick Loftus. However, no one is sure if the curse applies to him as he was a sub for the team. Whatever the validity of the curse, it’s true to say that Mayo haven’t won the Sam Maguire since 1951, despite reaching the final over a dozen times since.
Baseball’s most cursed team: Chicago Cubs
In 1945, William Sianis brought his pet goat to a game in Wrigley Field. He wanted to watch Chicago Cubs with his pet, okay? Nothing strange about that. But apparently the smell of the goat was getting to the other people in the stadium, so he was asked to leave.
Sianis left the stadium in a rage. He cursed the Cubs, saying they’d never win again. And unbelievably, that really came to pass. It was 46 years after the passing of Sianis before the Chicago Cubs won the National League Championship Series again in 2016, against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Football’s most cursed team: Birmingham City
Birmingham City Football Club moved to its grounds in St Andrews in 1906. But the people who used to live there were not pleased about being moved on.
The original inhabitants of St Andrews are said to have hexed the football stadium. And whether true or not, managers throughout the decades took this curse seriously. In a bid to break the curse, they painted the players boots red, put crosses on the floodlights, consulted clairvoyants and even urinated on the pitch.
Finally, in 2006, it seemed like the curse had finally run its course. This is when Birmingham City FC triumphed in the stadium against Queens Park Rangers, with a 2-1 score.
