Tuesday 11th December
*Odds Correct as of 12.10pm on Friday 7th December 2018
The main focus on Tuesday night will be on four games, both matches in Groups B and C, where in Group B, Barcelona face Tottenham and Inter Milan take on PSV, and in Group C where Liverpool face Napoli and Red Star Belgrade face Paris St Germain.
Group B
For Spurs, they need to equal or better the result that Inter Milan achieve at home to PSV Eindhoven in order to progress to the Knockout phase. That sounds simple enough, but the problem is that they have to do that against Barcelona at the Nou Camp.
The big question mark in this game though is whether Barcelona, who are already qualified as the group winners, will decide to rest players like Suarez, Messi and Coutinho for the match. If they do, then Spurs chances of success increase dramatically and the odds being as they are, it seems as though the bookmakers feel Luis Enrique will indeed rest his players for their next La Liga game at the weekend.
Having beaten PSV in Holland a few weeks back, Inter will be confident of doing the same at the San Siro and that means Tottenham will need to win in Barcelona in order to progress. That’s a tough task as the last time the Spanish side lost at home in the competition was way back in 2013.
Group B Tips
Barcelona v Tottenham – Draw and Both Teams to Score – 7/2
Inter v PSV – Inter to win/ Both teams to score – No – 13/10
Group C
Group C is the most open of the groups heading into Matchday Six. Three teams, Napoli, PSG and Liverpool can still qualify from the group, with PSG needing a point away to Red Star Belgrade, or better, in order to progress, while Liverpool need to beat Napoli at Anfield by a two-goal margin in order to leapfrog the Italian side and ensure they reach the knockout phase.
However, if Paris St Germain were to lose to Red Star Belgrade, then any Liverpool win over Napoli would be enough for them to leapfrog Paris into second place in the group and depending on the size of the win, Liverpool could still finish top of the table.
It is very reminiscent of the famous game with Olympiakos in 2005, when the Reds also needed to win by two clear goals in their final group game. They went 1-0 down to a Rivaldo free kick in the first half before staging a dramatic second half fightback when goals from Neil Mellor, Florent Sinama-Pongolle and a Steven Gerrard special earned the Reds a 3-1 win and a place in the knockout phase.
It proved to be crucial as Liverpool went on to win the trophy later that season in Istanbul, beating Milan on penalties after a sensational 3-3 draw.
Liverpool are going to need an incredible display that equalled the performance against Olympiakos to get through this game as Napoli are unbeaten in the group so far, and they handed Liverpool a 1-0 defeat at the Sao Paolo Stadium in October. The Neapolitans know that anything better than a two-goal defeat will see them through.
However, the Reds can point to a pre-season win over their opponents in Dubin in August, when Liverpool thumped Napoli 5-0, could lighting strike twice at Anfield in more ways than one?
With Paris St Germain likely to pick up the win against a Red Star Belgrade side who can now no longer qualify for the group, it seems likely that Liverpool will have to produce their best performance in the tournament since their 5-2 semifinal win over AS Roma last season, in order to progress.
Group C Tips
Liverpool v Napoli – Liverpool to win and both teams to score – Yes – 15/8
Red Star Belgrade v Paris St Germain – PSG to win and both teams to score – 15/8
Wednesday 12th December
*Odds Correct as of 12.10pm on Friday 7th December 2018
Pretty much all the key issues in the Groups E to H have been sorted heading into the final set of games, with just one match, Shakhtar Donetsk v Lyon, having a bearing on whether a team will qualify for the knockout phase or not. Other games will decide who earns a Europa League spot, or who will finish top of the group, but there isn’t the pressure that is on that Shakhtar Donetsk v Lyon game and as such, that is the game we are going to focus on here.
Group F
The biggest game of the night takes place in Group F, Manchester City, who have already qualified and just need one more point to confirm top spot in the group, face a relatively easy home game against the already eliminated Hoffenheim and given the rate that the German side have been conceding goals in their campaign so far, it is hard to see City, even without a full strength team, getting anything less than a win in this one.
That leaves the Shakhtar Donetsk v Lyon game, which is going to decide the qualifier alongside City from the group. Lyon’s four draws in the group mean they are unbeaten but it has opened the door for Shakhtar to pip them to qualify, as if the home side can win this game, they’d finish a point ahead of Lyon.
When the teams met in October, Shakhtar did lead the game 2-0, but a second half fightback earned Lyon a point at home, which does suggest that there will be goals during the game and that both sides will score.
For me, Shakhtar may have home advantage, even though they play their games away from the Donbass Arena due to the political situation in the Ukraine, but Lyon have proven difficult to beat in this competition and as such, I am backing the French side to earn a draw here to put themselves through.
Group F Tips
Shakhtar Donetsk v Lyon – Draw and both teams to score – 10/3
Man City v Hoffenheim – Manchester City to win and both teams to score – No – 20/21
