The Champions League only started a couple of weeks ago and by Wednesday evening late on this week, we will be at the halfway stage of the Group Stages of the competition. That means over the next few weeks we have a double-header of games where two teams from the group battle it out home and away over matchday 3 and matchday 4.
These two games can have a pivotal effect on the outcome of each group. It can make a team certain to be in the Knockout Stages in the New Year, it can make a team all but certain of qualifying, or if results go a different way, a group can be thrown wide open, with the last two games then deciding who will qualify for the latter stages of the tournament.
There are a number of big games this week in the Champions League including a massive game in Group B as Real Madrid and Inter Milan face off, with the two teams occupying the bottom two spots in their group. All four English sides are in action once again and they will hope their good form in the competition continues (all four currently sit at the top of their respective groups and have won seven of the eight games they have played so far, drawing the other).

Champions League Tips
Tuesday 3rd November
- Lokomotive Moscow v Atletico Madrid (5.55pm)
Atletico Madrid’s form this season has been strong domestically but they haven’t got things together in Europe as yet, but they are too good a side to let that continue for too long. As such, I expect them to claim the win here. Atletico Madrid to win – 1/3.
- Shakhtar Donetsk v Borussia Monchengladbach (5.55pm)
A massive game in this group as the winner could well take a real step towards qualifying. Howeber, as this group has been very tight from the very start, I think that we may well find that this game also ends up in another draw. Draw – 11/4.
- Atalanta v Liverpool
Liverpool’s record under Jurgen Klopp away to Italian sides reads played 5, lost 5. I can’t see that improving any here given the Reds problems in defence and the quality of the Atalanta attack. This could well be an upset on the cards. – Atalanta to win – 21/10.
- FC Porto v Marseille
Marseille haven’t performed well in the group stages this season whereas FC Porto have been more impressive and given the Portuguese Champions are on home soil, I would expect them to claim the victory here. FC Porto to win – 5/6.
- FC Salzburg v Bayern Munich
Salzburg are not quite the potent force that they were in this compettion last season and Bayern are starting to show somewhat ominous form again in the Bundesliga. I think the current European Champions will claim a straightforward win here. Bayern to win – 1/3.
- Manchester City v Olympiakos
You can’t really make too much of a case for Olympaikos here. They did knock Arsenal out of the Europa League last season but Man City at the Etihad are a much tougher prospect. Man City to win 3-1 – 9/1.
- Midtjylland v Ajax
The Danish side put up a good fight at Anfield last week and should really have scored at least one goal. Ajax were 2-0 up at Atalanta last week but ended up drawing 2-2. I think they’ll make up for that here. Ajax to win – 8/13.
- Real Madrid v Inter Milan
A defeat for either team here could be a real blow to their chances of progressing from this group, depending on how the Shakhtar v Borussia game ends. Home teams tend to do well in this fisture, winning 11 of the 15 games between the teams. I think that happens here again tonight. Real Madrid to win – 17/20
Wednesday 4th November
- Istanbul Basaksehir v Manchester United (5.55pm)
Despite another home loss in the Premier League last weekend, United have two wins from two in the Champions League and against a Turkish side without a point in their group from the opening two games, I feel United should have enough quality to pick up a third win here. Man Utd to win – 4/11.
- Zenit St Petersburg v Lazio (5.55pm)
This is a somewhat tricky game to call between two sides whose form can be so erratic, especially on the road in Lazio’s case. Zenit are not as strong as side as they once were and they have lost their opening two games, but I feel they will do enough to secure a point here. Draw – 12/5.
- Barcelona v Dynamo Kiev
Barcelona should win this game comfortably as their 1/8 odds suggest, so for a bit of a better value bet, check out the Correct Score market where a 3-0 Barcelona win pays out at a tempting 11.2, Correct Score – Barcelona 3-0 Dynamo Kiev – 11/2.
- Chelsea v Rennes
Chelsea snapped up Rennes first choice goalkeeper in the summer and I expect them to compound that by earning a second win in the group here. Stamford Bridge has been a tough place for any team to get a win in Europe and I can’t see that changing here. Chelsea to win and both teams to score – 2/1.
- Club Brugge v Borussia Dortmund
Club Brugge have overperformed in this competition this season, while Dortmund have under-performed and lie a point behind the Belgian side, however, I feel the German team will do enough to claim the win here. Dortmund to win – 4/6.
- Ferencvaros v Juventus
Juventus should win this one comfortably, by what score is the decision to make here. With Cristiano Ronaldo back their chances of a good-sized win have increased markedly. Correct Score – Juventus to win 3-0 – 6/1.
- Red Bull Leipzig v Paris St Germain
Perhaps the biggest game on Wednesday night and a repeat of last year’s semifinal. PSG won that game 3-0 but I think this will be tougher. Red Bull need to bounce back after a 5-0 mauling by Man Utd last week, but I think it will be tough here. Draw – 11/4.
- Sevilla v Krasnodar
Sevilla are a very strong side and Krasnodar were well beaten at home by Chelsea last week. This should be a comfortable win for the home side. Sevilla to win to nil – 20/21.
