The road to the final: Real Madrid
Real Madrid faced Sporting Lisbon, Borussia Dortmund and Legia Warzaw in the group stage.
They bested their Portuguese rivals 4-2 across two legs, destroyed Legia Warzaw 5-1 in Spain before being held to a 3-3 draw in Poland for an 8-4 aggregate score and saw both games with the Germans result in a 2-2 stalemate.
This put them through to face Napoli in the round of 16, who they beat 3-1 both home and away for an aggregate score of 6-2 to send them up against Bayern Munich. The Germans were defeated in both legs for an aggregate score of 6-3.
Madrid then faced their long-time rivals Atletico Madrid in the semi-finals, smashing the first match 3-0 with a hat-trick from Cristiano Ronaldo. Atletico won the next game 2-1 but it wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit, and Real Madrid made their third Champions’ League final of the last four years.
The road to the final: Juventus
Juventus began with a group stage consisting of themselves, Sevilla, Dinamo Zagreb and Lyon. They made an inauspicious start to the tournament with a 0-0 draw at home against the Spanish side before despatching the Croatians in a 4-0 whitewash away, then defeating Lyon in a one-goal match on French soil.
Lyon held Juventus to a draw in Italy, but the Italians beat both Sevilla and Zagreb in their follow-up matches to face FC Porto in the round of 16, beating them 2-0 and 1-0 in each leg.
This set them up for a quarter-final match against Barcelona, which they won 3-0 on home soil before holding the Catalan side to a draw in Camp Nou to face Monaco in the semi-final. A swift 2-0 away victory followed by a 2-1 win in Italy sent them through to the final.
