This week, we are at the fourth round stage, which comprises 16 games, many of which pit top Premier League teams against each other.
The action began on Tuesday night with the first fixture in the round as Tottenham and manager Jose Mourinho clashed with Chelsea under Mourinho’s protégé Frank Lampard at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. There follows a further seven games, four Wednesday night and three on Thursday to decide which eight teams make it through to the quarterfinal stage.

Let’s now take a look at the Carabao Cup fixtures for this week, starting with a quick review of last night’s big London derby as Tottenham clashed with Chelsea.
Carabao Cup 4th Round Fixtures & Results
Tuesday 29th September
- Tottenham 1-1 Chelsea (Tottenham win 5-4 on penalties)
Both sides fielded almost second-string teams for this game, but it was very much a game of two halves with Chelsea dominating the opening 45 minutes and deservedly taking the lead thanks to Timo Werner’s first strike for the club. In the second half though Spurs came much more into it and late on Erik Lamela turned home Reguilon’s cross to take the game to penalties. Nine players scored in succession before Chelsea’s Mason Mount took their fifth spot kick, but could only clip the outside of the post, which saw Chelsea eliminated and Spurs move into the quarterfinals.
Let’s now preview the big games ahead on Wednesday and Thursday night.
Wednesday 30th September
- Newport County v Newcastle United (5.30)
- Burnley v Manchester City (7.00)
- Brighton v Manchester United
- Everton v West Ham United
Tonight’s action starts with a potential giant killer of a game as Newport County take on Newcastle United in what is going to be a tricky game for Steve Bruce’s men, although it is worth noting they did despatch lower league Morecambe 7-0 in the previous round.
After that the rest of the evening is taken up with all-Premier League clashes, with Burnley facing Manchester City in the 7pm game. Pep Guardiola’s team will be desperate for a win after their 5-2 humbling at the hands of Leicester City on Sunday and as Champions of the trophy for the past two years, they won’t want to head out at this relatively early stage.
Brighton and Manchester United lock horns once again just a few days after they clashed in the Premier League at the weekend. United won that game 3-2 in extraordinary fashion, being awarded a penalty by VAR after the final whistle had blown. Brighton dominated that game and will be out to seek revenge against what should be a strong United side on the south coast.
Last up it is early Premier League pace-setters Everton, who have won all their games this season, taking on a West Ham side who smashed Wolves 4-0 at the weekend to give themselves a much-needed boost of confidence. This is a tough game for David Moyes against his former club though and I think the home side will be the clear favourite to win this one.
Our Tips
- Newcastle United to beat Newport – 4/11
- Man Utd to beat Brighton – 4/5
- Manchester City to beat Burnley – 1/3
- Everton to beat West Ham – 8/11
A fourfold accumulator bet with these four selections at bet365 would see you return at odds of 4.65/1 which means a ÂŁ10 stake would see you win ÂŁ46.50, plus you would get your ÂŁ10 stake money back too.
Thursday 1st October
- Brentford v Fulham (5.30)
- Aston Villa v Stoke City (7.00)
- Liverpool v Arsenal
Thursday’s trio of games begins with the early kick off being a repeat of last season’s Championship Playoff Final. In that game, Fulham came out on top, but after an undeniably awful start to their Premier League campaign, I feel Scott Parker’s team could be in trouble here against a Brentford side who have began the season pretty well and look well set to make another run at promotion to the Premier League this time around. Revenge over Fulham would also be sweet given their defeat a few months back.
After that it is a clash of two Midlands sides as Aston Villa, who today signed Ross Barkley from Chelsea on loan for the season, face off against Michael O’Neill’s Stoke City. Villa have begun the season superbly well, winning both their opening two games and I feel they have the quality to get the better of the Potters here.
Last up is another game that was played at the weekend as Liverpool and Arsenal lock horns at Anfield once again. Last season, the teams met in this competition too and the result was an incredible 5-5 draw with Liverpool winning on penalties. I can’t see quite as many goals this time around and despite both teams likely to be much changed from the ones that saw Liverpool win 3-1 in the Premier League at the weekend, I still fancy the home side to progress.
Our Tips
- Brentford to beat Fulham – 7/5
- Aston Villa to beat Stoke – 13/20
- Liverpool to beat Arsenal – 19/20
A treble bet with bet365 Sport using the selections outlined above, would see you offered a prize of 6.72/1. This means a ÂŁ10 bet would see you return ÂŁ67.20 in winnings, plus you would also get your stake money back.
