Both teams sit in the top five of the Premier League, the Red Devils occupying third place in the league and starting to draw in both Arsenal and Manchester City above them. Newcastle, in contrast, have had a little slump in form and now sit 5th in the table eight points behind their opponents on Sunday, although with a game in hand.
With a win guaranteeing the victor a place in the Europa League next season, it would give both teams a chance to focus on earning a Champions League spot, or even winning the league, with the knowledge that they already have a European spot earned for next season.
Bet365 Sport already have plenty of pre-match markets available for the game that you can bet on right now but keep your eyes peeled for more over the coming days and of course, don’t forget all the In Play betting that will be available on the game once it kicks off on Sunday.
Let’s now preview the game in a bit more detail.
Carabao Cup Final – Preview
Manchester United meet Newcastle United on Sunday at Wembley as both teams face off for the first time against each other in the Carabao Cup Final, which will be shown live on Sky Sports in the UK.
They have met previously in the FA Cup Final, back in 1999, when goals from Teddy Sheringham and Paul Scholes handed Manchester United a 2-0 win, landing the second part of their famous treble that year.
They have met once already this season at Old Trafford where the teams played out a somewhat unusual 0-0 draw.
Let’s now take a look at both teams run to Wembley, their historic record, recent trends, plus of course any key injuries or suspensions for both teams.
Carabao Cup Final Officials
- Referee – David Coote
- Assistant Referees – Nick Hopton and Tim Wood
- Fourth Official – Simon Hooper

- Assistant VAR – Eddie Smart
David Coote will be the man in charge for Sunday’s game, his first opportunity to referee a major cup final. He has refereed a total of 23 games so far this season issuing 86 yellow cards (3.73 per game on average) and two red cards in those games.
Newcastle United v Manchester United – Through History

Head To Head Record – Manchester United v Newcastle United
- Games Played – 174
- Manchester United Wins – 90
- Newcastle United Wins – 43
- Draws – 41
What is abundantly clear is that Manchester United very much hold the upper hand in this fixture, winning more than double the amount of games of Newcastle and in recent years, that record has been even more in their favour.
Since January 2002, the teams have played 39 times and Manchester United have won an incredinle 27 of those games with eight draws and just four wins for Newcastle United.
One slightly positive thing for Newcastle fans though is the fact that the last two fixtures between the two have both finished all-square, a 1-1 draw last season at St James’ Park and a 0-0 draw at Old Trafford this.
Football League Cup Record
- 16th September 2012 – Man Utd 2-1 Newcastle United
- 26th October 1994 – Newcastle United 2-0 Manchester United
- 27th October 1976 – Manchester United 7-2 Newcastle United
The teams have met just three times in the Football League Cup, with Manchester United winning two of those games, the first in 1976 and the last in 2012.
Newcastle’s sole win over United came in the 1994 FLC, when they were 2-0 winners at St. James’ Park.
Newcastle & Manchester United League Cup Final Record
Newcastle have only ever reached the League Cup Final once previously. That was back in 1976 and they were defeated 2-1 on that occasion by Manchester City.
In contrast Manchester United have reached nine finals previously, winning five and losing four. Their last victory in a final was back in 2017 and their last defeat came back in 2003.
The two have never met in a League Cup Final previously, but have met in an FA Cup Final in 1999 when Teddy Sheringham and Paul Scholes both scored either side of half time to give Manchester United a 2-0 win on the day.
Current Premier League Records
- Man Utd – 3rd, P24, 49pts (+13) 41 goals scored, 28 conceded.
- Newcastle – 5th, P23, 41pts (+20) 35 goals scored, 15 conceded.
The teams met once this season, drawing 0-0 at Old Trafford.
However, that was the only game of the last six which did not see both teams score.
In fact, this fixture tends to produce a lot of goals with the five games prior to that 0-0 draw earlier this season producing a total of 22 goals (over 4 per game).

With both first and second choice goalkeepers ruled out through suspension (Pope) and being cup-tied (Dubravka) Newcastle will give Loris Karius his first chance between the sticks in the final, however other than that Newcastle should be at full strength for the game.
Who Will Win The Carabao Cup Final On Sunday?
So the big question; who will win Sunday’s Carabao Cup Final?
Having taken a look at both teams there are some factors that I think are pointing in favour of Manchester United winning this game. They are:
- Newcastle without both their first and second choice goalkeepers
- Manchester United’s current form is much better than Newcastle’s
- Manchester United’s squad and team will have more big game experience than Newcastle United’s
- Newcastle’s squad lacks the depth of quality that Manchester United have and can call upon in the second half of the game
- Newcastle have not won a major trophy since the 1968-69 Inter Cities Fairs Cup and in five Wembley appearances since, have not won a single game.
So as you can see, Manchester United seem to have a lot going in their favour and as such, I am backing them to win here with the following bets:
- Full Time Result – Manchester United to win – 6/5
- Result and BTTS – Man Utd and Yes – 7/2
- Correct Score – Manchester United 2-1 Newcastle United – 8/1
- Anytime Goalscorer – Marcus Rashford (Man Utd) – 13/10
Good luck if you are having a bet on the game and remember to tune in from Sunday at 4.30pm!
