How do I play blackjack?
Blackjack is essentially a face-off between you and the dealer. With many card games the dealer is simply the person who dishes out the cards. In blackjack, the dealer is your nemesis.
The aim of the game is to reach a score of 21 points or at least get closer than the dealer does without going over 21 points. As soon as you go over 21, you go bust and you’re out of the game.
The game starts with the dealer dealing one face up card each to every player and themselves and then one face down card to every player, again including the dealer themselves.
In some circumstances, there is just one player at the table. You and the dealer. In any case, it only matters what’s happening between the two of you. So focus on that, no matter who’s at the table.
As soon as you have both of your cards, you have what is called your starting hand. Then you’ve got to decide what to do next…
Card points in blackjack
Before you decide how to proceed, you have to be sure you know exactly what your hand means for you. So that means you need to know how much each card is worth.
Here are the points breakdown of every blackjack card:
- Any card with a number on it is worth its face value
- Kings, queens and jacks are each worth 10 points
- Aces are worth either 1 point or 11 points
What actions can I take?
When you’re called to take action during a game of blackjack, here are your options:
- Get another card (known as hit)
- Keep your hand unchanged (known as stand)
- Double your bet, get another card and stand (known as double down)
- Create two new hands if you currently have two hands of the same value (known as split)
When can I take out insurance?
You can take out insurance if the dealer has a face-up ace. Insurance basically means that if the dealer wins the hand, you don’t lose any money. This cost of taking out insurance in blackjack is half the amount of your original bet.
