There are many aspects to the festive season in the UK. For sure, there is the time off work, the exchanging of gifts with loved ones and family, the inevitable trudge back to the shops in the days following to exchange the jumper that your mad Aunt bought you because it is three sizes too small and was last in fashion back in 1974.
Indeed, it is this familiarity and reversion back to our old habits that makes Christmas what it is for so many people. And just the same as Christmas Specials on the TV, the UK sporting calendar also has its own Christmas traditions, or more accurately, sporting events that take place this time of the year that attract huge viewing figures and of course, plenty of top quality betting.
So if you are one of the lucky ones who is going to be enjoying a little quality quiet time to yourself alongside all the wining, dining and wassailing this Christmas, then why not indulge yourself in a spot of sports betting on the following trio of big sports events?
Of course, if you haven’t yet signed up to a bookmaking site then you’ll need a quality and reliable one and Coral Sport’s Free Bet Bonus offer is well worth a closer look, offering you £30 worth of free bets when you deposit £10 as a new customer.  You can even sign up with any of the Coral sites, including Coral Vegas and its £10 free no deposit required sign up bonus, and you’ll still be able to access Coral Sports and place your festive bets.
Assuming you have signed up, what are the big sporting events that Coral will be focusing on this Christmas? We’re going to give you a preview of each below:
The Winter Festival Meeting at Kempton Park – 26th & 27th December
Known everywhere across the UK by racing fans as simply The Boxing Day Meeting, The Winter Festival at Kempton is not just one of the biggest race meetings taking place at Christmas, alongside the likes of the Grand National meeting at Aintree and the Cheltenham Festival, it is one of the biggest meetings of the entire National Hunt season.
That’s because across the two-days of racing at Kempton there are a number of different Grade One and Grade Two races being competed for. This includes the popular Christmas Hurdle and the Kauto Star Novices Chase. The biggest race of the meeting however is the massive King George VI Steeplechase, a Boxing Day staple and one of the biggest and most prestigious National Hunt races of the year.
Currently, Coral are offering the following ante-post odds on the most likely winners of this race:
- Might Bite – 11/8 Favourite
- Bristol De Mai – 7/2
- Fox Norton – 6/1
- Thistlecrack – 6/1
- Douvan – 10/1
- Djakadam – 12/1
- Whisper – 12/1
- Disko – 16/1
- Tea for Two – 16/1
- Top Notch – 16/1
- 20/1 Bar
Might Bite and Bristol De Mai are the form choices and the bookies reckon it will likely be a shootout between the two, but watch out for Thistlecrack. The 6/1 shot won this race last year and was in imperious form before an injury curtailed his season in January. He made his return at Newbury on the 1st December 2017 but was beaten into 5th place and that has seen his odds lengthen. However, it isn’t the first time he has finished outside the places and he has such heart and such speed, that he if he can recover his best form, he will be a real threat here.
The PDC World Darts Championship (14th December 2017 to 1st January 2018)
The PDC World Darts Championship started back on the 14th December with the initial First Round matches (and comfortable wins for the likes of Michael Van Gerwen, Steve Beaton, Gerwyn Price and James Wilson) and the remainder of the first round will take place up until the 21st December. The Second Round then begins on the 22nd and runs until the 27th, but the players have two days off, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, during that period.
The Third Round starts on the 27th and is completed on the 28th as there are just eight matches in the tournament at this stage. The four quarterfinals are all completed on the 29th December and the two semis on the 30th December. There is then another one day break on New Year’s Eve before the Final is contested in the evening of New Year’s Day.
That means an absolute ton of darting action to enjoy across the festive season and into the New Year and Coral are offering extensive betting options on the event, including betting on the Outright Winner, which players will reach the final, as well as pre-match betting on all games and of course, a wide choice of In-Play betting markets while the games are taking place.
The crucial question here will be who can stop Michael Van Gerwyn in this tournament, especially with all his most difficult opponents seemingly drawn together in the bottom half of the draw, while Van Gerwyn is in the top half with seemingly a much easier path to the final. However, the Dutchman could face his nemesis, compatriot Raymond van Barneveld, at the quarterfinal stage of the event and that could well be one of the classic matches of this year’s tournament.
Massive selection of Premier League games
Having already just played a full round of games on the 22nd/23rd December, the Premier League teams now face a period of three more games in the space of around eight days, starting with the action on Boxing Day.
It is a hugely crucial period, with a total of 15 points up for grabs in the space of just two weeks from the 22nd December and it can make or break a team’s season if they have a strong or weak festive season on the pitch.
That means plenty of great football action to enjoy over the Christmas week and into the New Year and just how much is outlined by the fixtures coming up as we have outlined below. All matches are 3pm kick off time unless stated otherwise:
