It’s high time we did a beginners guide to PLO.
Despite it being one of the most popular poker games out there, surpassed only by Texas Hold’em, it still confuses many online poker players. And particularly those who are new to the felt.
Having said that, there are so many reasons why it’s a great idea for you to get stuck into Omaha. And this beginners guide to PLO should hopefully give you the confidence you need to set out on your PLO journey.
Beginners guide to PLO
When you play Pot Limit Omaha, you’ve got to make a five-card hand to compete with against your opponents.
You get dealt four hole cards, and you need to use at least two of them in your five-card hand. That’s where things are a little different from hold’em. In hold’em, you only get dealt two cards but you don’t even need to use one of your cards to make up that five-card hand at the end.
So that’s something you really need to keep in mind when you’re playing Omaha. There is less leeway when it comes to your hole cards.
The betting rounds are much the same as in hold’em with pre-flop, flop, turn and river bets. And these continue until either showdown or all the other opponents fold. But when you’re playing a pot limit game, the size of the bets you make is limited to the size of the pot or smaller.
Pot limit games are much more closely associated with Omaha than Hold’em, although they do exist there too.
Because you get more hole cards in pot limit omaha, it makes sense that you’ll hit higher value combinations more often. That means you’ve got to be somewhat careful that you don’t overvalue your hand. That’s a very common mistake beginners make in PLO.
