This year’s Wimbledon tournament has been a graveyard for many of the top seeds as they have fallen by the wayside in the men’s and particularly the women’s event. However, as we now reach the quarterfinal stage of both tournaments, we now have a much clearer idea of who is likely to be contesting the final of both men’s and women’s events this year.
Let’s take a look at how the quarterfinals are shaping up together with the odds on our tip to win provided as always by bet365, who are offering extensive tennis betting on Wimbledon over the fortnight.
Men’s Tournament
Although many top seeds have fallen by the wayside, the top two remain in the men’s draw and all the other quarterfinalists (apart from possibly Gilles Simon) are seeded, however they are lower ranked players. What is interesting though is the number of big serve players who have once again made it to the quarterfinals.
Quarterfinal Line Up
- Roger Federer (Swi) 1 v Kevin Anderson (SA) 8
Given Roger Federer’s frightening displays at Wimbledon both last year and this year it is hard to make a case for a conventional player to beat him on this surface. Indeed, former British number 1 Tim Henman has speculated that only a ‘freak of nature’ player with a huge serve could pose Federer a threat. Anderson will be the first Federer faces (with another awaiting him in the semi-final against the winner of Raonic v Isner). The big South African has the height and serve to win points early against the Swiss ace, but if Federer starts to get those returns back, then I fear Anderson may well go the way of all Federer’s opponents in the past two years.
Our Tip – Federer to win – 1/14 with Bet365
- Milos Raonic (Can) 13 v John Isner (US) 9
A north American battle of the big servers pits Canadian finalist from 2016, Milos Raonic against John Isner, the man who was involved in the longest ever Wimbledon match against Nicolas Mahut several years ago. Both players are tall and have massively powerful serves and you can put your money on most of the sets these two play will likely be decided on a tie-break. I think this game is more going to be about who can get the most returns back in play and for me, I think Raonic just shades it here.
Our Tip – Raonic to win – 4/6 with Bet365
- Novak Djokovic (Ser) 12 v Kei Nishikori (Jap) 24
The big question is whether Novak Djokovic is getting back to somewhere approaching his best and it is fair to say that at this years Wimbledon, there have been more than a few glimpses of Djokovic’s best form returning. He is by no means there yet, but he should have enough to get past Kei Nishikori who has recovered well from injury to be part of the tournament and in truth, has likely exceeded his expectations in reaching the quarterfinals. However I think this will be where his tournament comes to an end.
Our Tip – Djokovic to win – 1/6 with Bet365
- Juan Martin del Potro (Arg) 5 or Gilles Simon (Fra) v Rafa Nadal (Spa) 2
Rafael Nadal’s opponent in the fourth quarterfinal is still to be decided with Juan Martin del Potro currently leading Gilles Simon 2-1 in sets as they seek to finish their game today. Nadal’s return to form at Wimbledon after several years of going out in the early stages has been welcome but he would likely much prefer to face Simon than Del Potro. For me, if Simon wins the Del Potro game, Nadal will make it through. However if Del Potro wins, it will be a much closer call and I think the Argentinean may spring a shock here.
Our Tip – Del Potro to win – Odds unavailable as Del Potro/Simon match not finished
Women’s Draw
The women’s draw has seen the seeds decimated with Angelique Kerber, ranked 11th for Wimbledon, the highest remaining seed in the draw. Two of the quarterfinalists were not seeded, Cibulkova and Giorgi and it promises to be a real battle between the remaining eight women to see who stands a chance at winning the trophy on Saturday.
Quarterfinal line up
- Domenica Cibulkova (Svk) v Jelena Ostapenko (Lat) 12
After being the unfortunate player to miss out on the top 32 seedings, due to Serena Williams earning a seeded spot, Cibulkova has had a point to prove at Wimbledon this year and the powerful Serbian has been in good form thus far, not dropping a set en-route to the quarters. Ostapenko is also yet to drop a set in this one but her route has been somewhat easier and for me, this will be a close one but I am backing Cibulkova to produce an upset win.
Our Tip – Cibulkova to win – 11/10 with Bet365
- Daria Kasatkina (Rus) 14 v Angelique Kerber (Ger) 11
This should be the closest match of the quarterfinals and the winner of this tie will feel they have a great chance of making the final. Kerber has lost just one set so far at Wimbledon this year and looks in solid form, but so does Kasatkina who defeated Van Uytvanck in the last 16 and Ashleigh Barty in the last 32. This one sees the bookies have Kerber as the favourite, but I think Kasatkina is playing the better tennis at the moment and I am backing her to land a surprise win.
Our Tip – Kasatkina to win – 7/4 with Bet365
- Kiki Bertens (Hol) 20 v Julia Goerges (Ger) 13
Goerges has come through four tough games so far, including a three set epic that lasted almost three hours in the third round against Barbora Strycova. But for me Bertens is the player in form h aving beaten both Venus Williams and then Karolina Pliskova to reach the quarterfinals. Those two tough games will stand her in good stead here against the German and while it may go to three setes, I think Bertens will edge it.
Our Tip – Bertens to win – 10/11 with Bet365
- Serena Williams (US) 25 v Camila Giorgi (Ita)
Camila Giorgi has defeated four strong players to reach this stage of the tournament but she has not yet faced a player that has the aura, skill and experience possessed by Serena Williams. The American is now the hot favourite to win the tournament following the loss of so many seeds and it is easy to see why. After a shaky start at Wimbledon she has now found her form and rhythm and barring fitness issues, which dogged her at the French Open, she should win her quarterfinal here comfortably.
Our Tip – Williams to win – 1/5 with Bet365
Who will win it outright?
A few weeks ago we predicted Roger Federer and Serena Williams to land both titles and looking at the quarterfinals right now, we are very comfortable in both of those predictions standing up well over the last few days of the tournament.
