We absolutely love slots. But that isn’t to say they’re straightforward. There’s a whole lot of slots lingo, terminology and jargon that can feel a little overwhelming. So we’re here to help with the a-z of slots.
A is for autospin
Most online slots have an autospin option. That means you can tell the slot how many spins you want to do in a row and just let the game play out in front of your eyes. You don’t have to press any more buttons, just relax and enjoy the show. And cross your fingers that you win something!
B is for bet365
Alright so this maybe isn’t what you’ll find in every a-z of slots, but bet365 definitely deserves a place here. This online casino is one of our favourite places to spin the reels. Plus you can use this bet365 bonus code to get a wonderful welcome offer, if you’re a new player.
C is for collect
Now this is a very important term. The collect button is the one you hit when you’re finished playing your slots and want to turn your credits into cash. We love cashing out, especially if we can get a little profit along the way!
D is for drops
Did you know that in some slots, the symbols drop into place as opposed to spinning on reels? It’s definitely something to look out for. You can find it on a good few slots including Gonzo’s Quest, one of our favourites.
F is for free spins
One of the best things about slots is the special bonus features. And one of our favourite features is free spins. That’s when you get additional spins without having to shell out more cash. Definitely deserves a spot on our a-z of slots!
G is for gamble feature
Of course, all types of slots and any type of slot play is gambling. So the fact that some slots have a gamble feature might leave you scratching your head. This basically gives you the chance to boost your winnings (sometimes by double or triple). But in order to do so, you’re risking everything.
H is for hit
When you strike a winning combination, it’s called a hit.
I is for icons
Depending on the circles you’re in, you might call slot symbols icons or, well, symbols. We’re in the symbols camp, to be honest.
J is for jackpot
During certain games, you’ve got the opportunity to get a really big prize in one fell swoop. This is called a jackpot.
L is for line bet
In the a-z of slots and beyond, it’s useful to know the term line bet. That’s effectively how much each potentional line costs you to bet. For example, if you are playing a 20-payline slot and it costs Ā£1.00 a spin, each line bet is Ā£0.05.
M is for multiplier
Man, do we love a multiplier. These symbols work to increase your payouts by several multiples. They usually start at 2x and go up to 10x! Some slots have multipliers during their regular games, while in others, they only come out during bonus rounds. But either way, we love to see them.
N is for nudge
A cute little bonus feature in the a-z of slots, the nudge is when you can move a reel up or down a little in the hopes to trigger a few more paylines.
P is for progressive jackpot
Progressive jackpot slots are SO MUCH FUN. They’re like a regular jackpot slot on steroids. Every time you play. a small percentage of the cost of your spin goes towards a progressive jackpot. Over time, that progressive jackpot grows every time anyone anywhere in the world spins that slot. And when it’s triggered, usually at random, you’ve got the chance to take down a massive payday. Six, seven or even eight figure wins are possible!
R is for RTP
Everyone knows that slots are big business. So as much as we wish everyone could always win more than they paid in, that’s simply not the case. The amount a slot pays out long-term is called a Return to Player percentage, or RTP. They’ll always be under 100%, but it’s interesting to see what you can expect when you look at the slots you play.
S is for scatters
Want to win outside of regular paylines? Then scatter symbols are your friends!
T is for three-liner
Not all slots are hugely complex, bonus-feature packed games that require you to read the whole a-z of slots. Three-liner slots are traditional games that have just three reels. Typically, you win if you match three symbols in a row.
U is for up/down slot cycle
Slots are governed by random number generators, which means they don’t pay out the same amount every minute, hour, day, week or even month. Up/down slot cycle is the fluctuations that occur to slot payouts over time.
V is for volatility
Closely related to RTP, but with an important difference, volatility is about the average amounts that are paid out. For example, low volatility slots pay out often but the prizes are generally small. That makes them a less risky option than high volatility slots, which don’t pay out very often, but when they do, the prizes are big.
W is for wilds
Wild symbols are so great. They come in a few different forms, which all have one thing in common. They substitute for almost all symbols, maximising your chances of hitting additional paylines.
Z is for zig-zag
Traditional slots, like three-liners, pay out in a straight line. But things are different these days. Most slots you’ll play now have zig-zag paylines, which mean you can get payouts for matches across several different types of patterns. And that is a great note to end our a-z of slots!
