There were a number of surprising results in this round none more so than Morocco eliminating Spain from the tournament on the back of a 3-0 penalty shootout victory. Japan though could not do likewise as Croatia landed their fourth consecutive FIFA World Cup knockout round stage win on penalties with a 3-1 penalties victory.
Portugal dropped Ronaldo for their Round of 16 clash with Switzerland and it worked a dream as his replacement Goncalo Ramos scored a hat-trick in their 6-1 demolition of the Swiss, while Brazil were 4-0 up against Korea inside 37 minutes, allowing the Koreans just one goal in consolation as they moved through comfortably 4-1.
Kylian Mbappe inspired France to a 3-1 win over Poland and Lionel Messi did the same for Argentina as they beat Australia 2-1. England produced a fine team display in beating Senegal 3-0, with the Three Lions scoring the joint most goal and having the best goal difference of any of the remaining teams left in the tournament.

FIFA World Cup Quarter Finals Preview
Friday 9th December
- Croatia v Brazil (3pm at the Education City Stadium)
Croatiaβs last four World Cup penalty shootouts have seen them win each time and that will be duly noted by Brazil who will be hoping that they can end the game without the need to go to extra time or penalties to decide the winner.
I donβt think they will as Brazil have by far the better head to head record and I just feel they are a much stronger squad than Croatia and have the players needed to open up this Croatia defence and score a goal or two.
I actually feel Brazil will win this game pretty comfortably so I am backing them to do precisely that with my tips below.

- Netherlands v Argentina (7pm at the Lusail Stadium)
These two teams have met five times at World Cup Finals, with two wins apiece and one drawn group stage game. Games between them have produced some spectacular moment and this game between the two wonβt be any different I feel.
Lionel Messi found his form against Poland in the Round of 16 and put in a fantastic display to lead his team to victory. However, this is an Argentinean team that can be got at and the Dutch have the quality in their team to do that.
I am expecting a good game with goals here and I can see both teams scoring once and perhaps extra time or even penalties needed to decide the winner. If it does go that far, then it is a toss up which of the two teams will land the win.

Saturday 10th December
- Morocco v Portugal (3pm at the Al Thumama Stadium)
Defensively Morocco are the best side remaining in the tournament after conceding just one goal in four games so far. The African side have been superb in the tournament so far, eliminating Spain on penalties after a fantastic tenacious display against Portugalβs Iberian neighbours.
Portugal though have found form at just the right time. Six goals against Switzerland shows what they are capable of, even without Ronaldo in from the start. While this will be a much tougher game I feel, I canβt see Fernando Santos making too many changes for this game.
This is going to be a very tight one and I think one goal either way will decide it and at present, I think Portugal are the team most likely to have the quality to be able to score the winning goal.

- Anytime Goalscorer β Joao Felix (Portugal) β 13/5
- England v France (7pm at the Al Bayt Stadium)
This could be a classic encounter between the two great rivals. England have a poor recent record against France but they have played the French twice in the World Cup Finals and won on both occasions (2-0 in 1966 and 3-1 in 1982).
Gareth Southgateβs team have scored the most goals (along with Portugal) in the World Cup so far and only conceded two, and they have the best goal difference across their four World Cup games thus far in the tournament.
France are so dangerous with Mbappe and their flair and invention in attack cannot be ignored, so this should be a cracker and it is a game where I think we will see goals at both ends.
