The world of women’s rugby has never been more gripping. And we’re all in for the upcoming 2021 Rugby World Cup.
Yes, we’re fully aware that it’s 2022. But because of postponements, we’ve had to wait until this year to see the action unfold.
They say that absence makes the heart grow fonder, and we’re going to say that’s never been more true for this upcoming sporting epic. So let’s jump in and give you everything you need to know before the 2021 Rugby World Cup kicks off.
One month of rugby action this autumn
The 2021 Rugby World Cup runs from Saturday, 8 October until Saturday, 12 November. Mark it in your diaries!
The Rugby World Cup New Zealand 2021. There’s a lot in a name
When we take the official title of the Rugby World Cup New Zealand 2021, we’ve got a whole lot to unpack. First off, it’s happening in New Zealand. More on that later. Second off, it was scheduled for 2021. However, it was postponed and is actually going to run this year. And that’s why the sporting event’s tagline is Playing in 2022.
And you also might notice that it has absolutely zero mention of gender. That’s because World Rugby has decided against marketing rugby going forward as either women’s or men’s. They’re both going to be given equal footing.
How can you tell this is a women’s event? Well, because of the year. The men’s isn’t taking place until 2023.
Shaking up the structures
Along with the name changes, there are going to be other changes in the upcoming Rugby World Cup. Quarter finals will replace the old knockout stage play offs and there’s also going to be at least five days between matches. All of these changes make the women’s competition more on a par with the men’s structure.
And the competing teams are…
There are a dozen countries competing in the 2021 Rugby World Cup. And they are:
- Australia
- Canada
- England
- Fiji
- France
- Italy
- Japan
- New Zealand
- Scotland
- South Africa
- USA
- Wales
Experts predict a big battle between New Zealand and England
At the time of writing, England are odds-on favourites to win the 2021 Rugby World Cup. However, New Zealand are the defending champions plus their playing on home turf. And if New Zealand do take home the trophy, they’re going to be the most decorated team ever, with a total of six wins. Now that’s an incentive and a half.
Could all of that give them an extra edge over their European rivals? Time will tell!

First Rugby World Cup in the southern hempishere
As we said before, New Zealand are hosting the Rugby World Cup 2021 this year. But did you know it’s their first time doing it? Not only that, but it’s the first time the Rugby World Cup has been hosted in the Southern Hempisphere.
That makes it an even bigger deal that they beat off competition from Australia to win the bid to host.
2021 Rugby World Cup action across three venues
The 2021 Rugby World Cup is going to be played in three stadiums, including two in Auckland and one in Whangarei. The main stadium is Auckland’s Eden Park, where the opening games, semi finals, third place play off and final will play out in a 60-capacity stadium. Then the quarter finals and pool games will be shared among the Semenoff and Waitakere stadiums.
